BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. --  Sophomore Pat Driscoll (Hingham, Mass.) scored six goals, including the go-ahead marker with 4:25 remaining, to lift UMass Boston to a 14-13 non-league college men’s lacrosse victory over Massachusetts Maritime Thursday evening at Clean Harbors Stadium.

Senior Al Craven’s (Milton, Mass.) natural hat trick helped stake the visiting Beacons (3-5) to a 4-1 advantage after 15 minutes of action, and UMass Boston received a pair of markers off the sticks of Driscoll and freshman Ryan Cassidy (Northbridge, Mass.) to extend that margin to 6-1 just 4:54 into the second stanza.  The host Buccaneers (1-7) netted five of the final eight tallies before intermission, including two by sophomore Kyle Lersch (Suffolk, Va.), to close to within three at 9-6 at the break, and goals by senior Connor Burke (Del Mar, Calif.) and junior Craig Nichols (Marshfield, Mass.) in the first 11-plus minutes of third quarter enabled the hosts to creep to within one at 9-8 before Driscoll scored twice in the final 3:03 of action to give the visitors an 11-9 edge heading into the final frame.

Massachusetts Maritime completed a 10-5 run with goals by Lersch and freshman Parker Simon (Kennett Square, Pa.) in the first 4:53 of the fourth quarter to pull even at 11-11, but senior Dale Nunn (Hillsborough, N.J.) answered back for UMass Boston less than four minutes later to give the visitors the lead back.  Junior Ryan Linn’s (Bourne, Mass.) man-up goal just 29 seconds later evened things again for the Buccaneers, but Driscoll’s sixth goal of the night with 4:25 remaining gave the Beacons the lead for good, as Nunn tacked on a key insurance tally 1:19 later to extend the margin to 14-12.  Nichols completed a hat trick with 1:36 to play to pull Massachusetts Maritime back to within one, and the Buccaneers won the ensuing face-off but were unable to get a shot off in the final 39 seconds to force an extra session.

Nunn added a hat trick of his own to go with an assist for four points in the triumph for UMass Boston, who also received a goal and two assists from junior John Canty (Milton, Mass.).  Junior Aaron Pollock (Belmont, Mass.) notched four assists for the Beacons, who also received a helper off the stick of freshman Ian Ferrari (Mashpee, Mass.) on the night.  Linn collected a hat trick and three assists to finish with six points in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime, which also received hat tricks from Nichols (who finished with four points) and Lersch.  Burke and Simon each finished with a pair of goals and an assist for the Buccaneers, who also received three assists off the stick of junior Michael Lambros (Forestdale, Mass.).

Freshman Jake Gostanian (Andover, Mass.) picked up his first collegiate win in goal for UMass Boston with a 15-save effort, while senior James Hitchings (Dover, Mass.) made 12 stops in net for Massachusetts Maritime as the Buccaneers outshot the Beacons by a 43-35 margin for the match.

Massachusetts Maritime hosts Norwich in a Pilgrim Lacrosse League match on Saturday afternoon at Clean Harbors Stadium beginning at 1:00 p.m., while UMass Boston hosts UMass Dartmouth in a Little East contest on Saturday afternoon at Clark Athletic Field in Boston that also begins at 1:00 p.m.
