BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. -- Sophomore Harry Bernstein (Westfield, N.J.) netted a hat trick and a pair of assists for five points to lead Springfield to an 11-3 Pilgrim Lacrosse League victory over Massachusetts Maritime Saturday afternoon at Clean Harbors Stadium.
The visiting Pride (9-5, 6-0 Pilgrim) extended their conference winning streak to 22 straight dating April 2007, as Springfield struck for three goals in the final 2:29 of the opening quarter in building a 5-1 advantage at the break. Bernstein completed his hat trick with a pair of tallies that came as part of five unanswered third quarter markers that enabled the visitors to pull away, as the Pride had six different goal scorers for the afternoon.
Senior Joe Macchi (Mahopac, N.Y.) added a pair of goals and an assist for three points in the win for Springfield, which also received two goals each off the sticks of senior Kyle Gable (Somers, Conn.) and junior Kyle Louer (Islip, N.Y.). Sophomore Mike Delia (Wading River, N.Y.) added a goal and three assists in the triumph for the Pride, who also received a tally from sophomore Jarrid Johnson (Orlando, Fla.) and a single helper off the stick of junior Austin Orsini (Webster, N.Y.).
Junior Chris Davis (Cohasset, Mass.) netted a pair of goals in the setback for the host Buccaneers (2-11, 0-5 Pilgrim), who also received a tally off the stick of freshman Parker Simon (Kennett Square, Pa.) as well as assists from junior Michael Lambros (Forestdale, Mass.), sophomore Kyle Scannell (Tierra Verde, Fla.) and freshman Dan Langley (Abington, Mass.).
Sophomore Marc Martinez (Babylon, N.Y.) picked up the win in goal for Springfield with a three-save effort over the first half of action, as senior Matt Cipolla (Harrison, N.Y.) and sophomore Shane Ferguson (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) combined for five stops over the final 30 minutes of play for the visitors. Senior James Hitchings (Dover, Mass.) made a season-high 21 stops in net in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime, as the Pride outshot the Buccaneers by a 43-14 margin for the contest.
Massachusetts Maritime hosts Wheaton in a Pilgrim Lacrosse League outing on Wednesday evening at Clean Harbors Stadium beginning at 7:00 p.m., while Springfield will be idle until next Saturday afternoon when the Pride travel to Babson Park, Mass. to take on Babson in a Pilgrim Lacrosse League match that begins at 5:00 p.m.
