WORCESTER, Mass. --  Junior Danny Heelan (Avon, Conn.) netted a hat trick and added three assists for six points as Clark used six man-up goals in the second half to post a 10-5 victory over Massachusetts Maritime in the Pilgrim Lacrosse League opener for both squads Saturday evening at Granger Field.

The host Cougars (4-3, 1-0 Pilgrim) erased a 3-2 halftime deficit with a pair of markers off the sticks of senior Chris Adams (Bradford, N.H.) and sophomore Chris Johnson (Amherst, Mass.) to take a 4-3 advantage midway through the third stanza, and after freshman Parker Simon (Kennett Square, Pa.) evened matters for the visiting Buccaneers (1-6, 0-1 Pilgrim) with 5:37 remaining in the quarter, Clark took the lead for good on a man-up tally by senior Garrett McAdam (Portland, Maine) with two seconds to play in the frame.  The hosts scored five of the six goals in the final 15 minutes of play, including two each by Adams and Heelan, to post their triumph.

Adams added a hat trick of his own in the victory for Clark, which also received a pair of goals from Johnson and a marker and two helpers off the stick of McAdam.  Graduate student Shawn Roche (Centerport, N.Y.) added a single tally for the Cougars, who also received an assist from sophomore Phil Winslow (North Providence, R.I.).  Senior Connor Burke (Del Mar, Calif.) joined Simon with a goal and an assist in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime, which also received single markers from junior Michael Lambros (Forestdale, Mass.) and sophomores Kyle Lersch (Suffolk, Va.) and Kyle Scannell (Tierra Verde, Fla.) as well as assists from junior Craig Nichols (Marshfield, Mass.) and sophomore Peter Menard (Somerset, Mass.).

Sophomore Andrew DeVito (Glastonbury, Conn.) picked up the win in goal for Clark with a five-save effort, while senior James Hitchings (Dover, Mass.) made 18 stops in net for Massachusetts Maritime as the Cougars outshot the Buccaneers by a 49-17 margin and held a 14-4 face-off advantage for the match.

Massachusetts Maritime hosts UMass Boston in a non-league outing on Thursday evening at Clean Harbors Stadium beginning at 7:00 p.m., while Clark will entertain Lasell in a Pilgrim Lacrosse League match next Saturday evening at Granger Field that also begins at 7:00 p.m.
