NORTON, Mass. -- Freshman Mike Harrington (Sturbridge, Mass.) netted four goals, while fellow freshman Billy McNamara (Mansfield, Mass.) added a pair of goals and three assists to lead Wheaton to an 18-8 Pilgrim Lacrosse League victory over Massachusetts Maritime Wednesday afternoon at Mirrione Stadium.
The host Lyons (3-6, 3-1 Pilgrim) scored 11 of the first 12 markers of the match, including six unanswered tallies in the second quarter, in building an 11-1 edge at the break, as Wheaton received a hat trick from junior Warren Garceau (Guilford, Conn.) as well as five assists off the stick of fellow junior Drew Schaffer (New Haven, Conn.). Sophomore Ben Cederberg (Duxbury, Mass.) chipped in with two tallies and an assist for three points, for the winners, who also received a pair of goals from sophomore Bobby Barry (Duxbury, Mass.) as well as a marker and helper off the stick of fellow sophomore Chris Landers (Manchester, Mass.).
Junior Brian Burke (Del Mar, Calif.) netted a hat trick and added two assists in the setback for the visiting Buccaneers (4-6, 0-4 Pilgrim), who also received a pair of goals and a helper from sophomore Ryan Linn (Bourne, Mass.). Junior Connor Burke (Del Mar, Calif.) and sophomore Jake Bickley (Wilbraham, Mass.) also tallied for Massachusetts Maritime, which also received the first collegiate goal off the stick of freshman Kyle Scannell (Tierra Verde, Fla.).
Junior Schuyler Horn (New Hartford, Conn.) picked up the win in goal for Wheaton with a 10-save effort, while the tandem of junior James Hitchings (Dover, Mass.) and senior Alex Deveaux (Northboro, Mass.) combined for eight stops in net for Massachusetts Maritime as the Lyons outshot the Buccaneers by a 34-32 margin for the contest.
Massachusetts Maritime hosts Lasell in a Pilgrim Lacrosse League match-up on Saturday afternoon at Commander Ellis Field beginning at 1:00 p.m., while Wheaton entertains Norwich in a Pilgrim Lacrosse League clash on Saturday afternoon at Mirrione Stadium that also begins at 1:00.
