BOSTON, Mass.-- Senior Chris Wesche (Holden, Mass.) netted four goals and an assist for five points to lead Wentworth to a 9-6 non-league college men's lacrosse victory over Massachusetts Maritime Saturday afternoon at Sweeney Field.
Wesche notched a hat trick in the first 2:43 of action in propelling the host Leopards (2-1) to a 5-1 advantage after 15 minutes of play, as the two teams traded second quarter tallies for a 7-3 Wentworth edge at the break. The visiting Buccaneers (1-1) closed to within one with three third quarter markers, including a pair of man-up goals off the sticks of senior Kevin Schultz (Crofton, Md.) and junior Connor Burke (Del Mar, Calif.), but freshman Bill Berringer (Marblehead, Mass.) iced the Leopards' triumph with a pair of fourth quarter goals to account for the final score.
Berringer's two late tallies enabled him to complete a hat trick in the win for Wentworth, which also received a goal and an assist each from junior Chris Guilherme (Derry, N.H.) and sophomore Matt Cox (Granger, Ind.) as well as a single helper off the stick of junior Jeff Novak (Killingworth, Conn.). Connor Burke finished the day with a pair of goals and two assists for four points in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime, which also received a pair of tallies off the stick of Schultz as well as a goal and assist from junior Brian Burke (Del Mar, Calif.). Freshman Kyle Lersch (Suffolk, Va.) accounted for the other score of the day for the Buccaneers, who also received an assist from sophomore Jake Bickley (Wilbraham, Mass.).
Junior Sean Tobin (Silver Spring, Md.) picked up the win in goal for Wentworth with a six-save effort, while senior Alex Deveaux (Northboro, Mass.) made 18 stops in net for Massachusetts Maritime as the Leopards outshot the Buccaneers by a 52-23 margin for the match.
Massachusetts Maritime heads to North Dartmouth, Mass. on Monday afternoon to take on UMass Dartmouth in a non-league outing that begins at 4:00 p.m., while Wentworth will be idle until next Saturday afternoon when the Leopards entertain Nichols in a Commonwealth Coast Conference match at Sweeney Field that begins at 4:00 p.m.
