SALEM, Mass. -- Junior Brian Burke (Del Mar, Calif.) netted a pair of goals and an assist for three points, while fellow junior James Hitchings (Dover, Mass.) made 16 saves to lift Massachusetts Maritime to a 7-5 non-league college men's lacrosse victory over Salem State Tuesday afternoon at Alumni Field.
The visiting Buccaneers (3-2) snapped a 2-2 halftime tie with four goals in the third quarter, including a pair off the stick of junior Connor Burke (Del Mar, Calif.), to take a 6-3 advantage into the final stanza, as sophomore Jake Bickley (Wilbraham, Mass.) extended Massachusetts Maritime's edge to 7-3 early in the final period before the host Vikings (3-4) tallied twice late in the contest but could get no closer.
Senior John Herman (Stamford, Conn.) and sophomore Ryan Linn (Bourne, Mass.) also notched goals in the win for the Buccaneers, while junior Justin Jones (Danvers, Mass.) and sophomore Jonathan Falls (Seekonk, Mass.) each tallied twice in the setback for Salem State, which also received a goal off the stick of junior Robert Mulroy (Swampscott, Mass.) as well as single assists from seniors Scott Aronian (Chelmsford, Mass.) and Sal Silva (Lynn, Mass.) as well as freshman Ryan Gendreau (Danvers, Mass).
Hitchings improved to 3-1 on the season in net for Massachusetts Maritime with his 16-save effort, while junior Brendan Gill (Chelmsford, Mass.) made 12 stops in goal for Salem State as the Vikings outshot the Buccaneers by a 37-29 margin for the match.
Massachusetts Maritime opens Pilgrim Lacrosse League play on Thursday evening by hosting Babson at Commander Ellis Field beginning at 7:00 p.m., while Salem State entertains Keene State in a Little East match on Saturday evening at Alumni Field beginning at 6:00 p.m.
