BUZZARDS BAY, Mass.-- Senior John Herman (Stamford, Conn.) and junior Connor Burke (Del Mar, Calif.) each netted hat tricks as Massachusetts Maritime held off a late rally to post a 10-8 non-league college men's lacrosse victory over SUNY-Cobleskill in its season opener Sunday afternoon at Commander Ellis Field.

Connor Burke's second goal of the match with 1:13 remaining in the first half snapped a 3-3 tie and gave the host Buccaneers (1-0) a 4-3 edge at the break, and Massachusetts Maritime received three markers in the first 5:27 after intermission from Connor Burke, Herman and junior Brian Burke (Del Mar, Calif.) to take a 7-3 cushion. The hosts received a man-down goal from senior Kevin Schultz (Crofton, Md.) and a tally off the stick of sophomore Jake Bickley (Wilbraham, Mass.) to grab a 10-4 advantage with 5:29 remaining in the match, but the visiting Fighting Tigers (0-3) stormed back with four goals in a 2:26 span, including two each from seniors Andrew Abbott (Onondaga, N.Y.) and Tom Cunningham (Skaneateles, N.Y.), to close to within two and account for the final score of the contest.

Schultz finished with a pair of goals and three assists for five points in the win for the Buccaneers, who also received a goal and an assist from Brian Burke as well as three assists from senior Dan O'Brien (Weymouth, Mass.). Sophomores Michael Lambros (Forestdale, Mass.) and Ryan Linn (Bourne, Mass.) chipped in with single helpers for the winners on the day as well.

Abbott notched a hat trick and added four assists for seven points in the setback for SUNY-Cobleskill, which also received a hat trick and an assist from Cunningham. Sophomore Jake Hutchins (East Greenbush, N.Y.) and freshman Mike Janavey (Cross River, N.Y.) also tallied for the Fighting Tigers, who received a pair of assists from freshman Brian Murphy (Cross River, N.Y.).

Junior James Hitchings (Dover, Mass.) picked up the win in goal with a five-save effort for Massachusetts Maritime, while junior Robert McDonald (Amherst, N.Y.) made 15 stops in net for SUNY-Cobleskill as the Buccaneers outshot the Flying Tigers by a 49-18 margin in the first ever meeting between the two schools.
