BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. --  Sophomore quarterback Anthony Gagliano (Islip Terrace, N.Y.) amassed 193 yards of total offense and accounted for a pair of touchdowns to lead New York Maritime to a 31-14 non-league college football victory over Massachusetts Maritime in the Third Annual Chowder Bowl Thursday evening at Clean Harbors Stadium.

Sophomore Jamie Spanopoulos (Franklin Square, N.Y.) scored a pair of touchdowns from four and two yards out, respectively, in the opening 18-plus minutes of action to stake the visiting Privateers (1-0) to an early 12-0 advantage, and Anthony Gagliano hooked up with his junior brother John (Islip Terrace, N.Y.) on an 83-yard scoring strike early in the second stanza to extend that margin to 18-0.  Sophomore Nathan Sherr's (Lynnfield, Mass.) 66-yard touchdown run on the ensuing possession got the host Buccaneers (0-1) on the board, and Massachusetts Maritime was seeking to cut into its deficit further in the final 1:11 of the half before senior Michael Oehl (Nesconset, N.Y.) blocked a field goal and returned the recovery 73 yards for a touchdown and a 25-7 New York Maritime edge at the break.  Anthony Gagliano's three-yard run capped a 13 play, 58-yard drive to open the second half and extend the Privateer lead to 31-7, and the Buccaneers closed out the scoring for the evening when senior Howard Hayes (Westport, Conn.) forced and returned a fumble recovery 25 yards for a touchdown.

Anthony Gagliano completed four passes for 109 yards and added 84 more yards on the ground in the win for New York Maritime, while Spanopoulos rushed for 52 yards on 16 carries for the victors.  Sherr rushed for 162 yards on 15 carries in his collegiate debut for Massachusetts Maritime, while freshman quarterback Matthew Spinazzola (Melbourne, Fla.) completed 7-of-14 passes for 148 yards in his collegiate debut for the Buccaneers.  Massachusetts Maritime outgained New York Maritime by over 100 yards (429-325) in total offense for the contest, including a 309-244 margin on the ground, but the Buccaneers committed three turnovers to go with the blocked field goal that led to 12 Privateer points.

Sophomore Keith Barnes (Westbury, N.Y.) paced New York Maritime defensively with eight total tackles (seven solo) for the contest, while sophomore Sean Wiggers (Norwood, N.J.) added four stops and an interception for the Privateers.  Senior Ryan Howley (New Fairfield, Conn.) led Massachusetts Maritime with 13 total stops (nine solo), while Hayes added five tackles to go with his fumble recovery and touchdown return.

New York Maritime has won all three Chowder Bowl match-ups from Massachusetts Maritime since the trophy game began in 2007, including a 10-6 triumph in the first meeting and a 24-14 victory in the 2008 contest in Throggs Neck, N.Y.  Tonight's game was the highest scoring match-up in the Chowder Bowl series.

Massachusetts Maritime hosts MIT in a non-league outing next Saturday evening at Clean Harbors Stadium beginning at 7:00 p.m., while New York Maritime hosts FCS foe Wagner in a non-league contest next Thursday evening in Throggs Neck, N.Y. that also begins at 7:00 p.m.
