Men's Crew Wins Varsity Four Race In Spring Season Opening Competition At Amherst

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. --  The Massachusetts Maritime men’s crew team began its spring season on a high note on Saturday afternoon, as the Buccaneers claimed a 40 second victory over Amherst in the men’s varsity four race as part of a four-team regatta that took place on the Connecticut River.

 

The tandem of sophomore coxswain Patrick Wall (West Roxbury, Mass.), senior Liam Barry (Wellesley, Mass.), sophomores Nathanael Costa (Forestdale, Mass.) and Timothy O’Neill (Block Island, R.I.) along with freshman Scott Jones (Lebanon, N.H.) posted a time of 8:29 for the Massachusetts Maritime varsity, as the visiting Buccaneers topped the hosts’ time of 9:09 in competition.

 

Massachusetts Maritime’s men’s novice four consisting of sophomore coxswain Ethan Logan (Vernon, Conn.) and freshmen Cyrus Bastarache (Middleboro, Mass.), Beau Palanza (Mansfield, Mass.), Gregory Couse (Sewell, N.J.) and Shengyi Wang (Shanghai, China) finished third in its race with a time of 9:48, as UConn took top honors in the event and Fairfield followed in the runner-up spot.

 

Both the Buccaneer men’s and women’s squads will host Brandeis, Bryant, Endicott, Franklin Pierce, Merrimack and Roger Williams in a regatta next Saturday morning at the Keith Hartford Sailing Center that begins at 9:00 a.m.
