WORCESTER, Mass.-- Junior Ryan LaPrade (Leominster, Mass.) rapped out four hits and drove in five runs to lead Worcester State to a sweep of a Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader by scores of 12-0 in the opener and 6-4 in the nightcap Saturday afternoon at Rocheleau Field.

LaPrade led a 12-hit attack in the first contest for the host Lancers (7-7, 2-0 MASCAC), who jumped out to a 3-0 lead through three innings of action before breaking things open in their final two at-bats. Junior Nick Caparell (North Attleboro, Mass.) had two hits, including a two-run homer, for the winners, who also received a pair of RBI from sophomore Johno Hinkell (North Adams, Mass.). Junior T.J. Magnell (Leominster, Mass.) and freshman Jake Sanderski (Millbury, Mass.) also had two hits for Worcester State in support of junior Joey Lucier (Brockton, mass.), who allowed two hits and fanned four over six innings to pick up the win on the mound. Junior Matthew O'Brien (Swampscott, Mass.) suffered the setback on the hill in the opener for the visiting Buccaneers (5-6, 0-2 MASCAC), allowing five hits and three runs in four innings of work.

Massachusetts Maritime grabbed a 2-1 fourth inning lead in the nightcap, as senior Tyler Spofford (Sharon Springs, N.Y.) scored on a second inning wild pitch and sophomore Michael Vargas (Natick, Mass.) added an RBI double, but the Lancers used a five-run fifth frame, highlighted by LaPrade's two-run double, to take a 6-2 cushion. The Buccaneers answered back with a pair of sixth inning tallies on a throwing error and an RBI double off the bat of freshman Nick Montalto (South Yarmouth, Mass.), and the visitors had a pair of chances to tie the game over their final four outs but could not score.

Caparell, Magnell and sophomore Nick Fluegge (Ware, Mass.) each had two hits in the nightcap triumph for Worcester State, as junior Mike Borowiec (Spencer, Mass.) allowed seven hits and struck out four in 5 2/3 innings to pick up the win for the hosts and junior Kevin Hayes (Medford, Mass.) struck out two in recording the final four outs to pick up the save for the Lancers. Montalto, Spofford and senior Mark Mozelak (New Hartford, Conn.) each had two hits in the second game setback for Massachusetts Maritime, as junior David Hike (Riverview, Fla.) allowed five earned runs and fanned five in five innings of action to fall to 2-2 on the mound for the Buccaneers.

Massachusetts Maritime hosts Newbury in a non-league doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Commodore Hendy Field beginning at Noon, while Worcester State hosts Babson in a non-league contest on Sunday afternoon at WPI beginning at 1:00 p.m.
