BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. -- Junior Ben Campbell (Easthampton, Mass.) rapped out three hits and drove in three runs as Westfield State claimed the final Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference baseball playoff berth by sweeping a league doubleheader from Massachusetts Maritime Saturday afternoon by scores of 4-2 in the opener and 6-1 in the nightcap in games played at Commodore Hendy Field.

Campbell gave the visiting Owls (20-13, 7-7 MASCAC) a 2-0 fourth inning lead in the opener with a two-run homer (his third of the spring), but the host Buccaneers (10-16, 4-10 MASCAC) evened matters in the bottom of the frame on senior Mark Mozelak's (New Hartford, Conn.) two-run round-tripper, his first of the season. Junior Mike Trachtenberg's (Newton, Mass.) RBI single in the fifth gave Westfield State the lead for good, and the visitors added an insurance tally in the sixth when senior Cagney Turner (Carleton Place, Ont.) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Massachusetts Maritime had a pair of chances to either tie or take the lead in the final two innings, as the Buccaneers left the bases loaded in the sixth and a pair of runners in scoring position in the seventh to account for the final score.

Campbell and Trachtenberg each had two hits in the first game triumph for the Owls, as senior Josh Perches (Albany, N.Y.) improved to 2-1 by allowing five hits and two runs with three strikeouts over 4 2/3 innings of work. Junior Phil Towne (Franklin, Mass.) overcame three walks with four strikeouts over the final 2 1/3 innings to earn his first save for Westfield State, which had nine hits in the opener. Sophomore Nick Levitre (Grafton, Mass.) collected two of Massachusetts Maritime's six hits in the first contest, as junior David Hike (Riverview, Fla.) went the distance with one strikeout to fall to 4-5 on the mound for the Buccaneers.

Freshman Matt Kelly's (Weymouth, Mass.) RBI double in the top of the first gave the Owls an early edge in the nightcap, but the Buccaneers evened matters in the bottom of the frame when freshman Nick Montalto (South Yarmouth, Mass.) tripled and scored on a groundout by senior Tyler Spofford (Sharon Springs, N.Y.). Junior Ben Wagner (Cumberland, R.I.) gave Westfield State the lead for good with a second inning RBI single, and the visitors extended that margin to 4-1 in the third on an RBI double by senior Adam Franke (Monson, Mass.) as well as a run-scoring single off the bat of sophomore Pete Grillo (Shrewsbury, Mass.). Franke's solo homer in the fifth, his first of the season, and Campbell's sacrifice fly in the sixth closed out the scoring in the second contest.

Kelly rapped out three of Westfield State's nine nightcap hits, as junior Jesse Vermeersch (Marlboro, Mass.) scattered six hits and fanned six in going the distance on 98 pitches to improve to 4-1 on the mound for the Owls. Mozelak collected two hits in the second game setback for Massachusetts Maritime, as Levitre allowed seven hits and three earned runs while fanning a pair on the hill over five innings to fall to 3-2 for the Buccaneers.

Massachusetts Maritime hosts Lasell in a non-league outing on Monday afternoon at Commodore Hendy Field beginning at 3:00 p.m., while Westfield State will wrap-up regular season play with a non-league contest with Wesleyan on Tuesday afternoon in Middletown, Conn. that begins at 4:00 p.m. The Owls earned the fourth seed in next week's MASCAC Championships and will take on top-seeded Worcester State in opening round play next Thursday afternoon.
