BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. -- Senior Mark Mozelak (New Hartford, Conn.) and sophomore Corey Murphy (East Wareham, Mass.) each rapped out two-run singles to highlight a six-run sixth inning to back a complete-game five-hit effort on the mound by junior David Hike (Riverview, Fla.) and lift Massachusetts Maritime to an 8-2 victory over Salem State in the opening game of a Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Commodore Hendy Field.

The Vikings received a pair of hits and three RBI from freshman Chris Cocci and a complete-game effort from senior Alan Miner (Rochester, Mass.) to gain a split of the twinbill with a 12-4 nightcap triumph.

The host Buccaneers (9-13, 3-7 MASCAC) jumped out to a 2-0 first inning edge in the opener on Mozelak's sacrifice fly and an RBI double by sophomore Nick Levitre, but the visiting Vikings (13-16, 3-7 MASCAC) evened matters on sophomore Troy Ingemi's (Malden, Mass.) sacrifice fly in the fourth and sophomore Ryan Kane's (Nahant, Mass.) run-scoring double in the sixth. Murphy's two-run single gave Massachusetts Maritime the lead for good in the bottom of the frame, and insurance RBI singles off the bats of sophomore Wil Rodriguez (Lowell, Mass.) and junior Joe Albano (Agawam, Mass.) preceded Mozelak's two-run single that capped the scoring. Rodriguez collected two of the Buccaneers' nine hits in the opening win, as Hike fanned four in going the distance to improve to 4-4 on the spring for the hosts. Kane and sophomore Evan Valcourt (Salisbury, Mass.) each had two hits in the first contest for Salem State, as junior Mike Voyer (Plymouth, Mass.) allowed five hits and four earned runs in 5 2/3 innings in suffering the setback for the visitors.

Freshman Jonathan Smith's (Weymouth, Mass.) second inning RBI single gave Massachusetts Maritime an early edge in the nightcap, but Salem State evened matters in the third and broke things open with six tallies in the fourth frame, as bases-loaded walks to Cocci and senior Nick Dunn (Mashpee, Mass.), coupled with senior Ken Luongo's (Wilmington, Mass.), keyed the Viking rally. Cocci forced in a run after being hit by a pitch in the fifth, and the visitors tacked four more runs in their final at-bat on RBI singles by Valcourt and Cocci, a run-scoring double by Luongo and a sacrifice fly by freshman Matt Chabre (Malden, Mass.). The Buccaneers plated three runs in the bottom of the seventh on RBI singles by sophomore Andrew Saari (Framingham, Mass.) and freshman Kyle Armstrong (Whitman, Mass.) as well as a fielder's choice to account for the final score.

Luongo and Valcourt joined Cocci with two hits in the second game victory for Salem State, as Miner scattered nine hits and fanned four to improve to 3-4 on the mound for the Vikings. Albano and sophomore Ross Hickey (Centerville, Mass.) each collected two hits in the nightcap setback for Massachusetts Maritime, as Murphy allowed just three hits and three earned runs while striking out four in 3 2/3 innings of work on the mound for the Buccaneers.

Massachusetts Maritime heads to Fitchburg, Mass. on Monday afternoon to take on Fitchburg State in a MASCAC doubleheader that begins at Noon, while Salem State hosts Westfield State In a MASCAC twinbill on Monday afternoon in Salem, Mass. that also begins at Noon.
