BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. -- Junior Waldis Garcia (Lowell, Mass.) rapped out five hits and drove in six runs as Johnson & Wales overcame a three-run deficit in the middle innings to post a 24-13 non-league college baseball victory over Massachusetts Maritime Thursday afternoon at Commodore Hendy Field.

The visiting Wildcats (14-13) trailed 8-5 heading into the top of the sixth before erupting for nine runs in the frame, highlighted by a three-run double by Waldis, a two-run two-bagger from senior Frank Nadjavestky (Avenel, N.J.) and two-run single by senior Justin Maldonado (South Burlington, Vt.), to take a 14-8 cushion. Johnson & Wales plated six more tallies in the seventh, including a two-run homer off the bat of sophomore Bryan Sayers (Chelmsford, Mass.) and a two-run single by sophomore Nick Alosco (Mahopac, N.Y.), and Garcia added a sacrifice fly and a single over the final two frames to complete his performance.

The host Buccaneers (6-9) jumped out to a 5-0 first inning advantage on the strength of a two-run single by sophomore Ross Hickey (Centerville, Mass.) as well as RBI singles off the bats of sophomore Nick Levitre (Grafton, Mass.) and freshman Kyle Armstrong (Whitman, Mass.), but Johnson & Wales closed back to within 5-3 in the third. Senior Tyler Spofford's (Sharon Springs, N.Y.) RBI single in the fourth extended Massachusetts Maritime's lead to 6-3, and after the Wildcats received a run-scoring triple from Maldonado and junior Michael Sarfati's (North Plainfield, N.J.) second RBI single of the day to close to within 6-5, the Buccaneers regained their three run lead in the fifth on freshman Nick Montalto's (South Yarmouth, Mass.) RBI double and a run-scoring single by senior Mark Mozelak (New Hartford, Conn.), setting up the Wildcats' rally.

Maldonado and Sarfati each drove in three runs in the win for Johnson & Wales, which received three hits each from Nadjavestky, Sarfati and Alosco as part of a 23-hit attack. Kuschman, Sayers, Nadjavestky and Alosco chipped in with two RBI for the visitors, as freshman Derek Nesbit (North Providence, R.I.) picked up his third victory in four decisions this spring with two innings of relief work. Hickey rapped out a pair of hits and drove in three runs in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime, which also received two RBI each from junior Joe Albano (Agawam, Mass.) and freshman William Shouldice (Rutland, Vt.) as well as two hits from Levitre and fellow sophomore Andrew Saari (Framingham, Mass.). Junior Matthew O'Brien (Swampscott, Mass.) suffered the setback on the mound for the Buccaneers, as sophomore Corey Murphy (East Wareham, Mass.) allowed four earned runs and struck out four over the first five innings of play.

Massachusetts Maritime heads to Framingham, Mass. on Friday afternoon for a MASCAC doubleheader with Framingham State that begins at 2:00 p.m., while Johnson & Wales travels to Boston, Mass. on Saturday afternoon for a GNAC twinbill with Emerson that begins at Noon.
