Bucs Win, Advance in ECAC Tournament

A spectacular six innings in relief by David Hike (Riverview FL) held Wentworth Institute of Technology scoreless leading the Massachusetts Maritime Academy Buccaneers in a 6-4 victory in the first round of the ECAC Division III New England Baseball Tournament.

The Buccaneers bats jumped into action in the first inning with a lead-off home run to left-centerfield by Bob Weber (Norwell). Wentworth answered in the bottom of the frame in an inning that featured a hit batter, a wild pitch and a walk from MMA started Billy Martin (Virginia Beach, VA). Three more Wentworth runs in the bottom of the third marked the end of the day for Martin.

Martin went three frames allowing all four Wentworth runs on eight hits.

The Buccaneers cut the Leopards led by two runs in the top of the sixth, aided by two WIT errors. Mark Mozelak (New Hartford, CT) then added to the MMA lead in the top of the seventh with a two-run home run to left field.

Hike pitched brilliantly allowing just two hits in his six innings of work, striking out five as he held WIT scoreless the rest of the way to pick up the win.

Gabe Stallions (Onset) led off the top of the eight with a single up the middle and then advanced to second on a ground out by Joe Albano (Agawam). Greg Wiggin (Marshfield) ran for Stallions and came around to score on a ground out by Weber.

Mozelak finished the day 3-for-5 for the Buccaneers with two RBI and two runs scores. Weber was 1-for-4 with two RBI. Both had home runs.

With the win the #3 seeded MMA Buccaneers (22-13) advance to the championship round tomorrow at 12 pm (noon) when they will face tournament #1 seeded Roger Williams University (33-12) at Sal Paolino Field in Bristol.
