Buccaneers take Team First Place in 14th Annual Travis Fuller Invitational

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass – Friday afternoon, Massachusetts Maritime cross country hosted the 14th Annual Lt. Travis J. Fuller Invitational on the banks of the Cape Cod Canal in misty, cool conditions. The women's course measured exactly three miles and a field that consisted of six teams.

The race started at 4pm and after a short 20 minutes Eastern Nazarene's Rodelina Kingsley finished in first place with a time of 20:05. Five second behind Kingsley finished Buccaneer Lily Hakkarainen (Chesterfield, N.H.) finished in second place, on her 18th birthday, with a time of 20:10 on a pace of 6:30 per mile. Maritime claimed five more spots in the top ten, fourth, fifth, seventh, eighth, and tenth, on their way to winning the women's team championship. Finishing fourth was Meaghan Hamilton (Weymouth, Mass) with a time of 20:24. The other top five finisher, Sarah Smialek (Dartmouth, Mass) finished with of 20:28. Finishing third in the race and earning the bronze medal was Rivier University's Elizabeth Meehan with a final time of 20:22.

With the solid individual finishing by Maritime, the women took the championship with 26 points. Rivier University finished second with 51 points, and Eastern Nazarene College finished in the bronze medal position with 61 points.

The next race for the Cross Country team is the James Early Invitational, which will take place on Saturday, October 6th at Westfield State University.
