Hamilton Leads Women's Cross Country To Eighth Place Finish At University Of New England Invitational

BIDDEFORD, Maine --  Both Massachusetts Maritime cross country squads opened their respective 2017 campaigns with solid performances at the University of New England Invitational on Saturday afternoon, as the Buccaneer men placed seventh overall while the Buccaneer women finished eighth in competition at Rotary Park.

 

Senior Robby Galvin (Woburn, Mass.) was the top individual runner on the men’s side for Massachusetts Maritime, as he placed 12th in a field of 129 competitors with a time of 29:20.6 over the 8K layout.  Sophomore Daniel Plumb (Hopkinton, Mass.) was next in 23rd place with a time of 30:26.1, while freshman Alex Imperillo (Chelmsford, Mass.) followed with a 52nd place time of 31:59.2.  Sophomore Kyle Hansen (North Chelmsford, Mass.) and freshman Zach Ferreira (Stoughton, Mass.) rounded out the Buccaneer scoring with respective 61st and 67th place finishing times of 32:16.3 and 32:36.6, as Massachusetts Maritime topped rival Maine Maritime, Thomas, Wheelock, Lesley and Mount Ida in the final team standings.  Wentworth took the team title with an 11-point victory (48-59) over host UNE, while Endicott finished third with a team score of 96 points.

 

Sophomore Meaghan Hamilton (Braintree, Mass.) led the way on the women’s side for the Buccaneers, as she placed 71st in a field of 127 runners with a time of 24:13.8 over the 5K course.  Fellow sophomore Heather Seggelin (Sharon, Mass.) was next in 74th place with a time of 24:17.4, while senior Kaylene Murphy (Randolph, Mass.) followed in 91st place in a time of 26:37.8.  Juniors Rachael George (Mashpee, Mass.) and Sara Merzon (Rockland, Mass.) rounded out Massachusetts Maritime’s scoring with respective 108th and 112th place finishing times of 30:36.5 and 31:12.8, as the Buccaneers topped Mount Ida and Thomas in the final standings.  The University of New England claimed the team crown with a score of 44 points, as Gordon (56) and Worcester State (63) claimed the runner-up and third place spots.

 

Both Massachusetts Maritime squads head to North Dartmouth, Mass. next Saturday morning for the UMass Dartmouth Shriners Invitational that begins at 11:15 a.m.
