Hall Named As Massachusetts Maritime Female Alumni Athlete Of The Year

Buzzards Bay, Mass. --  Women’s Cross Country & Outdoor Track & Field standout Meredith Hall and soccer all-conference performer Jonathan White were named as the 2010-11 Massachusetts Maritime Alumni Athletes of the Year on Wednesday evening as the Buccaneer Class of 2011 was honored at the Department of Athletics’ Senior Student-Athlete Awards Banquet on campus.

Hall, a native of Duxbury, Mass. and a graduate of Duxbury High School, was the top individual runner for Head Coach Linda Letourneau’s cross country squad last fall, recording a 34th place finish at the MASCAC Championships and posting six other top 20 finishes over the course of her career, and the two-sport captain also holds the school record in the javelin for Co-Head Coaches Chris Barry and Cathy Lohse-Whitelaw.  White, a native of Lynnfield, Mass. and a graduate of Lynnfield High School, earned all-MASCAC honors on defense for Head Coach Greg Perry’s Buccaneers last fall while also playing in the New England Inter-Regional All-Star Game at Harvard.  A CoSIDA Academic All-District honoree for his work in the classroom, White also ran on the outdoor track team this spring and finished 10th in the 400 meters at the MASCAC Championships despite not having competed in the event since high school.

Sailing standout Rob Gallagher (Sandwich, Mass./Sandwich) was named as the recipient of the Academic Dean’s Award, which honors senior student-athletes who have persevered in athletics as well as in academics, combining outstanding academic achievement with athletic accomplishments.  Gallagher helped Head Coach Chuck Fontaine’s squad post 14 top five performances in several prestigious events over the course of his career, including the Navy MacMillian & John F. Kennedy Cups as well as the Storm Trysail.

Women’s Soccer & Softball co-captain Katie Maynard (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford) received the Foundation Award, which is presented to a female student-athlete who best exemplifies the true spirit and philosophy of Division III athletics, as the two-sport standout ranked among the team leaders in several offensive categories over the last three seasons both on the field for Head Coach Christine McCarey and diamond for Head Coach Lindsay DeStefano.  Men’s Soccer & Outdoor Track & Field standout Brian Reske (Duxbury, Mass./Sacred Heart) was the recipient of the Trustees Award, which is presented to a male senior student-athlete who best exemplifies the spirit and philosophy of Division III athletics, as the two-sport letterwinner was a top performer in the soccer midfield while excelling in several distance events in track during his career.

ECAC Merit Medals, which recognize senior student-athletes who are members of a varsity team governed by ECAC and NCAA rules of eligibility and are bestowed on athletes who have combined athletic achievement with service to the institution, were presented to baseball captain Neil Patnaude (North Andover, Mass./North Andover), men’s cross country all-conference performer Patrick Dannaher (Arlington, Va./Trinity), rifle standout Kevin Geisel (Gloucester, Mass./Gloucester), volleyball captain Victoria Presutti (Marshfield, Mass./Archbishop Williams) and two-time MASCAC outdoor triple jump champion Rory O’Donnell (Somerset, Mass./Somerset).  Additionally, Hall, White, Patnaude, men’s lacrosse co-captain Mark Robinson (Wilbraham, Mass./Minnechaug Regional), men’s crew standout Jason Ellershaw (Conway, Mass./Frontier Regional) and rifle co-captain Michael Surette (Lynn, Mass./Lynn English) were presented with Senior Student-Athlete Advisory Committee Awards to recognize members of the senior class who have provided valuable contributions and service to the Buccaneer Student-Athlete Advisory Committee during their matriculation at the Academy.

Athletic Director’s Academic Achievement Awards were presented to 16 members of the senior class for their outstanding accomplishments in the classroom during their career, as the honor is awarded to student-athletes who have achieved a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.00 in their chosen major.  Those student-athletes honored were Marine Engineering majors Maynard, Robinson, sailing standout Michael Powers (Peabody, Mass./St. John’s Prep) and football letterwinners Jarad Horey (Ledyard, Conn./Ledyard) and Max Whitney (Middletown, R.I./Middletown); International Maritime Business majors White, Gallagher and baseball standouts Eric Moreschi (Quincy, Mass./North Quincy), Sarkis Nahigian (North Falmouth, Mass./Falmouth) and Wil Rodriguez (Lowell, Mass./Lowell); Emergency Management majors Hall, Ellershaw, Surette, outdoor track standout Anthony Venterosa (Stoughton, Mass./Stoughton) and volleyball co-captain Allison Condino (Fitchburg, Mass./Westlake) as well as Facilities Environmental Engineering major Reske.

Major Paul Kelly, the Chair of the Massachusetts Maritime Board of Trustees was the recipient of the ECAC Appreciation Award, which recognizes institutional staff members, past and present, for their efforts in advancing the services and programs of the ECAC and their member institutions.  Additionally, a total of 57 members of the Academy’s Class of 2011 were honored by Buccaneer Director of Athletics Bob Corradi and their respective head coaches with their senior class gifts.
