Fograshy, O'Donnell Lead Women's Cross Country To Sixth Place Team Standing At 2009 MASCAC Championships

WESTFIELD, Mass. --  The Massachusetts Maritime men placed fifth and the women sixth in overall team competition at the 2009 Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference Cross Country Championships that took place Saturday afternoon at Westfield State's Stanley Park.

The Buccaneers posted a team score of 130 points on the men's side and were led by juniors Paul Matz (Plainville, Mass.) and Patrick Dannaher (Arlington, Va.), who placed 21st and 24th individually with respective times of 28:24.90 and 28:40.20 over the five mile layout.  Freshmen Chad McCarthy (Sutton, Mass.) and Daniel McCloskey (Wakefield, R.I.) were next in 26th and 28th place, respectively, with times of 28:50.31 and 28:51.80, while junior Brian Maniglia (Pennsville, N.J.) closed out the Massachusetts Maritime scoring by placing 34th individually with a time of 29:31.65. 

Westfield State captured the team title on the men's side with a score of 37 points, besting runner-up and 2008 champion Fitchburg State's 48 points and third place Bridgewater State's 49 points in the competition.

On the women's side, senior Lauren Fograshy (Monson, Mass.) led the way by placing 24th individually for the Buccaneers with a time of 21:49.42 over the 5K layout, while fellow senior Kaitlin O'Donnell (Damascus, Md.) was next in 36th place with a time of 22:52.98.  Sophomore Emily Burbank (Yarmouthport, Mass.) and senior Emily Rizzo (Milwaukee, Wis.) followed in 50th and 54th place, respectively, with times of 23:35.51 and 23:56.89, while freshman Devon Smith (Hull, Mass.) closed out the scoring for Massachusetts Maritime by finishing 62nd with a time of 25:23.45.

Westfield State claimed its seventh straight MASCAC crown with a team score of 30 points, while Bridgewater State was the runner-up with 44 points and Salem State grabbed third place with 94 points.

Both Buccaneer squads travel to Keene, N.H. next Saturday morning to compete for their respective New England Alliance Championships that begin at 11:00 a.m.
