Colonels Sweep Buccaneers in Season Series

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass – Wednesday evening, the Buccaneers hosted Curry College at the Clean Harbors Center. It marked the second match of the season between the two schools. In their previous meeting on September 12^th, the Colonels beat the Bucs in straight sets, 3-0, and matched that score tonight.

For The Bucs

• Senior Captain Marie Harrison (Weymouth, Mass) led all players with seven kills. She also had 11 digs and a block assist.
• Senior Captain Christina Ruggeri (Bourne, Mass) led the match with 21 digs. She also had a team high two service aces.
• Senior Captain Michelle Sheehan (Attleboro, Mass) had one kill but dominated at the net with two solo blocks and two block assists on the night.
• Junior Madison Coughlin (Monroe, Conn) led the Bucs with nine assists while also recording nine digs. She joined Sheehan with two block assists. Coughlin also matched Ruggeri with two service aces.
• Freshman Kolby Barbieri (Haverhill, Mass) recorded four kills, second best on the team.

For The Colonels

• Senior Caroline Kilduff (Rockland, Mass) led the Colonel attack with six kills. She added four digs to her score line. Kilduff also had one of two solo blocks for Curry along with Emilie Wilkenson (Lawrenceville, Ga).
• Senior Lex Bell (Salem, Conn) and sophomore Rachel Damstra (Houston, Texas) tied for a match high in assists with 11 each. Bell also led the match in service aces with four.
• Senior Libero Shea Mathews (Concord, N.H.) posted 19 digs and had two service aces.

How It Happened

The Buccaneers fell behind 3-0 in the first set. They never fell more than three points behind the Colonels until Curry hit double digits. At that point, Curry led 10-6 and went on a 5-0 run. At 15-6, the Buccaneers scored two unanswered to get the deficit back to seven. Those two points would be two of five the Bucs would score the remainder of the first set. Curry, up 15-8, went on a 10-3 run to win the first game, 25-11.

Game two was all Curry at the start as they broke of a 5-0 lead in the early going. Up 16-10 midway through the set, Maritime found momentum with the help of a Sheehan block, multiple Curry errors and a handful of Harrison kills, scoring six of the next eight points to pull within two points, 18-16. A couple of unforced errors by the Buccaneers led to a momentum swing in favor of Curry in the late moments of game two. Curry scored seven of the next 10 points to take a 2-0 lead in the match with a 25-19 win in the game.

Maritime fought hard in game three, seemingly catching the Colonels on their heels. Though Curry took a 2-0 lead early, Maritime rattled off five of the next seven points to take their first lead of the night, 5-4. The Bucs extended that lead to three points with the help of two Ruggeri aces. Curry would regain the lead, 10-8, after another 5-0 run, of which they had one in each set of the match. The teams traded points and serves for much of the game and Maritime led late, 18-26. Another 5-0 run by the Colonels gave them a 21-18 lead. Still scratching, the Bucs scored the next two to pull within one point. Down 21-20, Maritime succumbed to a 4-0 run and finish by Curry to win the game, 25-20, for the Colonels and the match, 3-0.
