Buccaneers Sweep Gators on the Road

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass – Tuesday evening, the Buccaneers traveled to Pine Manor College to take on the Gators in their final road game of the 2018 season. Going in to the match against the winless Gators, the Bucs were looking for their second win of the season and they secured it by way of a straight set win over PMC, 25-10, 25-12, and 25-18.

Buccaneer junior Marie Harrison (Weymouth, Mass) led the match with seven service aces and six kills. Defensively, Harrison led the Bucs with 13 digs. Matching Harrison's six kills, senior Jen Roy (Attleboro, Mass) recorded six of her own and four service aces. Junior, Michelle Sheehan (Attleboro, Mass) racked up 19 assists, which led the way for both teams. Freshman, Mary Booth (Foxboro, Mass) added five kills for Maritime in the match. Junior Christina Ruggeri (Bourne, Mass) recorded seven digs defensively, but, did have three service aces.

Pine Manor's Keisha Hadorn led the way for the Gators with four kills in the match. Aleah Lauti led both teams with 14 digs on the defensive side of play.

The Buccaneers started off strong, taking a big early lead, 10-3, in the first set. As the set progressed, the Academy only extended their lead. Their largest lead, 15, came at the end of the set as Maritime took the set, 25-10. In the set, the Bucs recorded nine kills with just four errors in 25 total attacks for a .200 hitting percentage, the team's best hitting percentage in a single set all season.

In set two, the teams traded points early, followed by a 6-0 run by the Buccaneers to take an 8-2 set lead. Down 10-3, Pine Manor scored three consecutive points to cut the deficit to four points. That run was followed by three service aces by Harrison to extend the Buc lead back out to eight points. The Gators doubled the six points they had on the board but, Maritime then outscored the Gators 11-6, winning the set 25-12 to take a 2-0 match lead.

In the third set, down two, the Gators didn't go away easily. They took their first lead of the match, 5-3, early in the set. The teams then went back and forth for a good part of the game, trading serves all the way up until the game was tied at 15. That's when the Buccaneers surged, scoring 10 points to the Gator's three to win the set, 25-18, and the match, 3-0.

With the win, the Buccaneers improve to 2-18 on the season. The Gators fall to 0-16.

Next up for the Buccaneers is their final regular season match of the season when they host MCLA on Friday night at 7pm inside the Clean Harbors Athletic Center. The match has playoff implications for both teams as the winner secures the sixth and final spot in the MASCAC playoffs. Prior to the game there will also be a Senior Day ceremony for lone senior Jen Roy.
