Volleyball Drops Two at Eastern Nazarene in Tri-Match

QUINCY, Mass – The Buccaneers travelled to Eastern Nazarene College to play in a non-conference tri-match with the Dean College Bulldogs and the Eastern Nazarene College Lions. Earlier in the season, The Bucs dropped matched against both of these teams, 3-2 to Dean, 3-0 to ENC. Saturday went similarly to those two matches as the Bucs dropped 3-1 to Dean and 3-0 to the Lions.

Maritime v Dean College

Against Dean, the Buccaneers got a team leading, nine kill match from Tegan Murray (Newbury, Mass). Murray's nine kills were second best in the match. Junior Marie Harrison (Weymouth, Mass) added seven kills for the Bucs, adding 25 digs defensively. With 25 digs of her own, Christina Ruggeri (Bourne, Mass), tied with Harrison for the team lead in the defensive statistic. Ruggeri also had a match high three service aces against Dean. Senior, Jen Roy (Attleboro, Mass) and sophomore, Madison Coughlin (Monroe, Conn) each had four kills in the match with Coughlin adding 21 digs, putting three Bucs over 20 in the dig category.

Maritime fell behind after one set, losing by a close, 25-23 score. At one point in the first set, the Bucs were behind by as many as five point after the Bulldogs went on a five point unanswered run. Following the run, Maritime fought back, taking a 23-21 lead towards the end of the match. With the set victory in sight, Dean surged back to go on another unanswered run, taking the set, 25-23.

The second set went in favor of the Buccaneers as they had one of their best sets of the season. Though they fell behind early and traded points with Dean early, Maritime pulled away by as many as seven points, at one point leading, 12-5, and won the set going away, 25-15.

Set three was all Bulldogs as they jumped out to a seven, then a ten point lead, doubling the Buccaneers 20-10. Maritime fought to try and get back in to the set but were unable to get close with Dean winning the set 25-14.

Set four was competitive with the teams going back and forth, neither team ever taking a lead of more than four points until the very end, as Dean shut down the Bucs late to take the set, 25-20, and the match, three games to one.

Maritime v Eastern Nazarene

Against Eastern Nazarene, the match did not go as well as it did against Dean. Maritime was unable to crack 15 points in two of three sets and scored 17 in the deciding set. Senior Jen Roy (Attleboro, Mass) led the Buccaneers with seven kills in the match, adding a service ace to her stat line. Michelle Sheehan (Attleboro, Mass) assisted on 14 points in the match for Maritime and had one kill of her own. Libero, Christina Ruggeri (Bourne, Mass) led the team in digs with nine as she also had a service ace.

Sets one and two saw the Lions out to big leads as they led in set one, 20-10 at one points, and 22-8 in set two. Eventually, ENC won both sets by a 25-12 score. The third and final set of the match was more of the same for the Lions, getting out to a 19-12 lead, their biggest of the set, before finishing off the match by a third set score of 25-17.

With the Losses, the Buccaneers fall to 0-13 on the season. Next up for the Bucs is a MASCAC matchup with Fitchburg State on Tuesday night at home inside the Clean Harbors Athletic Center at 7pm.
