Bucs Fall in Three Sets to Lions

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass – Monday evening, the Massachusetts Maritime Buccaneers hosted the Eastern Nazarene College Lions in non-conference volleyball action at Clean Harbors Athletic Center. The Bucs fell hard in the first set losing 25-3, but bounced back and kept sets two and three close losing by scores of 25-22 and 25-17.

For Maritime, Marie Harrison (Weymouth, Mass) led the Bucs with seven kills, adding a service ace and seven digs. Offensively, Madison Coughlin (Monroe, Conn) had 14 assists in the match and added seven digs defensively. MMA libero, Christina Ruggeri (Bourne, Mass), led the Bucs and the match with 25 digs and added a service ace.

Eastern Nazarene's Courtney McCarthy led the match with eight kills; Milica Ivanovic added seven kills for the visitors.  Ruth Aguilar led the Lions and the match with 15 assists adding eight digs. Jessica Caldwell led ENC with 12 digs, Jenna Meacham grabbed 11 more digs.

After losing the first set, the Buccaneers and Lions traded points throughout the second set. At one point the set was tied at 20 apiece thanks to the play at the net by Jen Roy (Attleboro, Mass) and Brooke Naatz (North Andover, Mass). From that point, the Lions finished off the set, winning 25-22. Maritime came out strong in the third set, leading early 2-0. Though they kept it competitive throughout the set, ENC won the going away, 25-17 to take the set and the match 3-0.

With the loss, Maritime falls to 0-4 on the young season. Eastern Nazarene improves to 6-2.

Up next for the Buccaneers is a trip to Worcester, Mass to take on Worcester State University in MASCAC play at 7pm.
