LEICESTER, Mass. --  Seniors Cheyenne Melanson (Sandown, N.H.) and Marissa Turner (Coventry, R.I.) each recorded six kills to lead Becker to a 3-0 victory over Massachusetts Maritime in the opener for a non-league tri-match played Saturday afternoon at Leicester Gymnasium.  The Buccaneers then dropped a 3-1 decision to Lyndon State in the middle match, and the host Hawks ended the day with a three-set sweep of the Hornets in the nightcap.

 

Sophomore Kayla Dupree (North Bergen, N.J.) and freshman Morgan Gould (North Attleboro, Mass.) added four kills each in Becker’s (7-7) 25-6, 25-13, 25-16 opening match win, while junior Charlene Landry (Gorham, Maine) and freshman Olivia McGuinness (Colchester, Conn.) combined for 16 set assists for the Hawks, who also received 12 digs from sophomore Brittney Bullis (Stafford, Va.).

 

Freshman Marie Harrison (Weymouth, Mass.) collected 12 digs and four kills in the opening setback for Massachusetts Maritime (1-13), which also received three kills and five digs from senior Charleen Klangos (Lowell, Mass.).  Senior Emma Ethier (Norton, Mass.) and freshman Michelle Sheehan (Attleboro, Mass.) combined for eight set assists and 12 digs for the Buccaneers, who also received a combined nine digs from freshmen Christina Ruggeri (Bourne, Mass.) and Jenna Nalette (Goffstown, N.H.) in their second match-up with Becker in the last four days.

 

Senior Kelleigh Murtagh (Merrimack, N.H.) recorded 12 kills and 10 digs in Lyndon State’s (6-4) 25-22, 25-20, 24-26, 25-19 middle match triumph, as the Hornets also received 20 digs, eight kills and five service aces from freshman Lauren McDonough (Glastonbury, Conn.).  Senior Gwyneth Stahl (Whitinsville, Mass.) added 26 set assists and 12 digs for Lyndon State, which also collected 18 digs and seven kills from senior Abbey Greene (Exeter, R.I.).

 

Harrison posted a career-best 17 kills and 11 digs in Massachusetts Maritime’s four-set setback to Lyndon State (6-4), while Klangos also added a double-double effort of 15 digs and 11 kills from Klangos.  Ethier chipped in with 26 set assists and 10 digs for the Buccaneers, who also received 22 digs from Ruggeri.

 

Massachusetts Maritime hosts MCLA in its Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference opener on Sunday afternoon at the Clean Harbors Athletic Center beginning at 1:00 p.m., while Becker entertains Suffolk in a non-league outing on Tuesday evening at Leicester Gymnasium that begins at 7:00 p.m.  Lyndon State hosts St. Joseph (Vt.) in a non-league match on Wednesday evening in Lyndon, Vt. beginning at 6:00 p.m.
