BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. --  Sophomore Rachel Mills (Highland Mills, N.Y.) notched 14 kills and 13 digs to lead MCLA to a sweep of a college volleyball tri-match of host Massachusetts Maritime and Becker on Monday afternoon at the Clean Harbors Athletic Center, as the Trailblazers posted an opening 3-0 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference victory over the Buccaneers before collecting a 3-1 non-league triumph over the Hawks, who ended the day with a similar 3-1 win over the hosts.

 

Junior Courtney Parent (South Deerfield, Mass.) added 15 set assists and 14 service aces in MCLA’s (11-8, 1-2 MASCAC) 25-12, 25-12, 25-14 opening match triumph over Massachusetts Maritime (0-20, 0-4 MASCAC), while freshman Margaret Allen (East Patchogue, N.Y.) chipped in with five kills for the Trailblazers, who also received four kills each from Mills and freshman Brianne O’Rourke (Piseco, N.Y.) as well as nine digs from senior Allie Chang (Northport, N.Y.).  Junior Charleen Klangos (Lowell, Mass.) collected four kills and five digs in the opening setback for the Buccaneers, who also received three kills, four digs and a pair of service aces from senior Deb Langley (Abington, Mass.).  Sophomore Stephanie O’Connor (Westwood, Mass.) added seven digs for the hosts, who also received four set assists from sophomore Emma Ethier (Norton, Mass.) and a pair of service aces from freshman Becca Mello (Acushnet, Mass.).

 

After dropping the opening set of the middle match (25-18), MCLA rallied back to take the next three from Becker by scores of 25-15, 25-23 and 25-14.  Mills recorded 11 kills and 10 digs for the Trailblazers, who also received 32 set assists, 10 digs and six service aces from Parent to go with 23 digs from Chang.  O’Rourke recorded eight kills for MCLA, which also received a combined 13 kills from Allen and sophomore Sam Anderson (Floral Park, N.Y.).  Junior Samantha Caouette (Montague, Mass.) registered 11 kills and five digs in the middle match setback for Becker (6-17), which also received 19 set assists and 10 digs from freshman Charlene Landry (Gorham, Maine) to go with five kills and 15 digs from sophomore Marissa Turner (Coventry, R.I.).  Sophomore Cheyenne Melanson (Sandown, N.H.) notched five kills as well for the Hawks, who received a combined 28 digs from freshmen Samantha Lee (Prospect, Conn.) and Chase Peterson (Redding, Conn.).

 

Caouette collected eight kills and six digs in Becker’s 25-18, 25-11, 22-25, 25-10 non-league nightcap victory over Massachusetts Maritime, while Turner added six kills, five service aces and 12 digs in the win for the Hawks, who also received a combined 24 set assists and 20 digs from Landry and Lee as well as 24 combined digs from sophomores Monica Conway (Pocasset, Mass.) and Marissa Peyron (Stockbridge, Mass.).  Klangos paced the Buccaneers with 11 kills and 15 digs in the four-set setback, while sophomore Meaghan Brain (Hanson, Mass.) added seven kills for Massachusetts Maritime, which also received 23 digs from O’Connor to go with 14 digs and 11 set assists from Langley and three service aces from Mello.

 

Massachusetts Maritime hosts Wentworth in a non-league match on Thursday evening at the Clean Harbors Athletic Center beginning at 7:00 p.m., while MCLA hosts Salem State and UMass Dartmouth in a tri-match on Saturday morning in North Adams, Mass. that begins at 11:00 a.m.  Becker heads to Bennington, Vt. on Wednesday evening to take on Southern Vermont in a New England Collegiate Conference clash beginning at 7:00 p.m.
