Bucs Fall to Bison in Second Half

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass – The Buccaneers hosted the Nichols College Bison in the first of two non-conference game this week on Monday evening at Clean Harbors Stadium. Maritime kept it close early but two second half Bison goals sealed a 2-0 win for the visitors.

The Basics

Final: Bison 2, Buccaneers 0

Records: Mass Maritime 0-5

               Nichols 5-1

For The Bucs

  • No player took a shot on goal for the Bucs in the game.
  • Goalkeeper Paige Albertson (Nantucket, Mass) had one of her best games in a Buccaneers uniform in the game. She made 11 saves on 13 shots faced while allowing the two Bison goals.

For The Bison

  • Nichols took a total of 39 shots, 13 of which were on target.
  • Junior Melody Millett (Naples, Maine) scored a goal, her first of the season, and had an assist in the game.
  • Graduate student Meghan Dunn (Dudley, Mass) scored the other Bison goal. Her fifth on the year. She took seven shots in the game, two of which were on goal.
  • Freshman Taylor Patitucci (South Windsor, Conn) was credited with an assist on Millett's goal.

How It Happened

For much of the game the Buccaneers played stingy defense against the Bison. Though the Bison took 21 shots in the first half, a strong backline, anchored by senior captain Emma McNally (Mashpee, Mass) and a number of key saves by Albertson, kept the Bucs in the game. After the first 45, the teams went to the break scoreless.

In the second half, still on the offensive, the Bison broke through in the 50th minute on Millett's strike. The Buccaneers best chance of the game came on a counter-attack down the right side of the field. With the ball at her feet, Julia Podchaiski (Wallingford, Conn) was seemingly taken down inside the penalty area. With no call made, the ball rolled out of bounds, squandering the Maritime opportunity to tie the game. In the 69th minute, Dunn scored her, Bison leading, fifth goal of the season on a pass from Millett to put the game away at 2-0.
