Buccaneers Drop Season Opener to Mariners

CASTINE, Maine – Friday night, Mass Maritime women's soccer, under first year head coach John Sousa, took the field for the first time in 2019 in the first Maritime Soccer Cup, hosted by Maine Maritime Academy. The Buc women opened the weekend against host Maine Maritime. The Buccaneers were able to hold off the Mariners for the first 27 minutes of the game but when all was said and done, the Mariners took the game, 5-0.

The Mass Maritime roster is full of new faces and one of them, freshman Julia Quindley (Plymouth, Mass), led the Buccaneers offensively in the shutout with three shots, all on target. Senior Captain Emma McNally (Mashpee, Mass) and senior Jessica Baldassini (Middleboro, Mass) each had a shot on goal in the game as well. In total, the Bucs had seven shots, five on target. In her Buccaneer debut, freshman Goalkeeper Paige Albertson (Nantucket, Mass) faced 11 shots, made six saves and allowed the five Mariner goals.

For Maine Maritime, senior Eryn Doiron shined in the Mariners first win of their season, scoring four goals on four shots on target. She took seven shots total. The fifth Maine goal was netted by Laura Blue. Freshman Kelsey Bern tallied two assists for the hosts. The Mariners took 24 shots in the game, 11 on target. The Mariners used three goalkeepers in the game. Starter Emily Conway earned the victory with three saves on three shots faced in a half of play. Bess MacArthur finished the game in net, making two saves on two shots faced in just under 30 minutes of play.

The teams were tied for the first 27:30 of the game, and then Blue scored for the Mariners in the 28th minute. Doiron followed that up with her first goal five minutes later in the 33rd minute to take a 2-0 lead. The teams went to the halftime break at that 2-0 score in favor of Maine.

In the second half, Doiron scored three more times, in the 56th minute, 68th minute and the 74th minute. Unable to answer, the Buccaneers dropped their 2019 opener 5-0, to the Mariners.

The Buccaneers are back on the field Saturday afternoon at 2:30pm taking on SUNY Maritime in Castine.
