Buccaneers Lose Late to Salem State

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass – Saturday evening, the Buccaneers hosted Salem State University in women's soccer conference play at Clean Harbors Stadium. Though the game was close for the majority of the match, the Vikings took the win, 6-1, over their hosts.

For the Buccaneers, senior Madison Taylor (Longmeadow, Mass) scored her team leading fifth goal of the season and the lone goal of the game for MMA in the 48th minute which tied the game at one at the time. In Goal, Mikayla Houlihan (Middleboro, Mass) faced 19 shots on the night and saved 13 of them.

The Vikings got multi-goal games from two players, Katie Brown and Ashley Leboeuf who each scored two in the game. Starter, Kaitlyn Curley added one with Emily Boyle scoring off the bench. In goal, Amanda Backe saw just one shot on target on the night and it was the lone goal for the Buccaneers.

The game went scoreless for the first 36 minutes, thanks in part to the play in goal by Houlihan who easily had one of the best games of her young career, before the Vikings broke the scoreless tie in the 37th minute. With the Bucs unable to answer in the first half, the teams went to the break with Salem State up, 1-0. Early in the second half, Maritime leading scorer, Taylor, tied the game up with a 48th minute goal. The game remained knotted at one for the next 20 minutes, until the 68th minute when Leboeuf scored her first of two, and the eventual game winner, to break the tie. From there, it was all Vikings as they added four more to the scoreboard to take the match by a final of 6-1.

Up next for the Bucs is a trip to Curry College on Tuesday, September 25th. The team returns home on Thursday, September 27th for a 7pm kickoff against Becker College.
