Maritime Women's Soccer Falls In Opener To Maine

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. - Madison Taylor (Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow) collected her own rebound and fired it past Maine Maritime keeper Alice Van Kovn (Lancaster, CA./Vasquez) in the second minute of Saturday's season opening soccer match for a quick 1-0 Massachusetts Maritime lead. The lone goal was the only tally of the afternoon for the Buccaneers as they fell to the Mariners by a score of 6-1.

Maine Maritime scored two more times in the opening half building their lead to 3-1 by the break. Shannon Elwood (Kingston, Mass./Silver Lake) played a strong game up front on the left side and Emma McNally (Mashpee, Mass./Mashpee) provided some solid defense for the Bucs . Rachel Demmer (Rochester, Mass./Rochester) saved a sure Maine goal in the 22nd minute with a sliding save on a ball that got behind Massachusetts Maritime keeper Mikayla Houlihan (Middleboro, Mass./Middleboro). The Mariners scored their third of the opening half in the final minute as Eryn Doiron (Wilton, ME./Mt. Blue) scored her second goal of the match.

Maine's Makayla Lewis (Purcellville, VA./Loudoun Valley) tallied twice in the second half for the Mariners, with Jillian Holden (Madison, ME./Madison Area Memorial) adding the final Mariner goal.

Maine outshot the Buccaneers 26-5 and claimed a 6-1 advantage in corners. Houlihan finished the match with eight saves for the Buccaneers.

Massachusetts Maritime (0-1) returns to action on Monday when they will play a makeup match with Eastern Nazarene at Clean Harbors Stadium at 7 PM. Maine Maritime (2-1) heads for Nichols for a match tomorrow at noon.
