WORCESTER, Mass. --  Seven different players scored goals to lead Worcester State to a 7-0 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference women’s soccer victory over Massachusetts Maritime Saturday afternoon at Coughlin Field.

 

The host Lancers (11-4-2, 6-1 MASCAC) finished in a three-way tie with Bridgewater State and Westfield State for the MASCAC regular season championship with the triumph, and Worcester State claimed the top seed in next week’s conference tournament and a berth into next Friday’s semifinal round by virtue of a higher strength of schedule index.

 

Senior Ashleigh Howland (Wilmington, Mass.) gave the Lancers the only goal they would need just 5:46 into the contest on a feed from sophomore Christina Spinos (Wilmington, Mass.), and Worcester State received unassisted tallies from juniors Jenna Martin (Salem, N.H.) and Tsara LeBlanc (Gardner, Mass.), sophomores Kaitlin Beluzo (East Longmeadow, Mass.) and Skylar Alves (Ashburnham, Mass.) as well as freshman Talia Borci (Leicester, Mass.) over the final 36-plus minutes of the opening half to take a 6-0 advantage at the break.  Freshman Jill Anderson (Spencer, Mass.) closed out the hosts’ scoring with just under nine minutes remaining in the contest on a feed from fellow freshman Emily Remicio (East Hartford, Conn.) to account for the final margin.

 

Freshman Jill Zinkus (Grafton, Mass.) picked up the win in goal for the hosts without having to make a save on the afternoon, while sophomore Sara Coffey (Norton, Mass.) made 17 stops in net in the setback for the visiting Buccaneers (4-10, 1-6 MASCAC).  Worcester State took 37 of the 39 overall shots (including all 24 on goal) on the day while also taking all eight corner kicks in the contest.

 

Today’s match marked the season finale for Massachusetts Maritime, which recorded its highest finish in MASCAC play in the program’s 10-year varsity history.
