Taylor Nets Fourth Goal As Women's Soccer Drops 3-1 MASCAC Opener To Fitchburg State

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. --  Senior Siobhan O’Connell (Abington, Mass.) and freshman Kerri Morris (Marlboro, Mass.) each netted a goal and an assist to lead Fitchburg State to a 3-1 victory over Massachusetts Maritime in the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference women’s soccer opener for both teams played Friday evening at Clean Harbors Stadium.

 

Morris staked the visiting Falcons (2-3, 1-0 MASCAC) to a 1-0 advantage in the 21st minute with her first collegiate tally, and sophomore Brittny Peralta (Leominster, Mass.) extended that margin to 2-0 in the 53rd minute when she converted feeds from Morris and O’Connell, who closed out Fitchburg State’s scoring in the 63rd minute of action with a header off of freshman Rayna Ramirez’s (Agawam, Mass.) corner kick.  Junior Madison Taylor (Longmeadow, Mass.) provided the lone score of the night for the host Buccaneers (1-3, 0-1 MASCAC) with 3:37 remaining in the match, as her fourth tally of the season accounted for the final margin.

 

Freshman Sarah Hemmings (Eastham, Mass.) picked up the win in goal with a four-save effort for Fitchburg State, while sophomore Sara Coffey (Norton, Mass.) made 10 stops in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime as the Falcons outshot the Buccaneers by a 26-8 margin overall (13-5 on goal) and took five of the contest’s six corner kicks.

 

Massachusetts Maritime heads to Paxton, Mass. on Tuesday evening to take on Anna Maria in a non-league match beginning at 7:00 p.m., while Fitchburg State hosts Curry in a non-league contest on Wednesday afternoon in Fitchburg, Mass. that begins at 4:00 p.m.
