Hunt Named As MASCAC Women's Soccer Rookie Of The Week

Three Massachusetts Maritime fall sport student-athletes were recognized by the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference on Monday afternoon for their respective performances in cross country and soccer over the weekend.

Sophomore Jake MacVarish and freshman Robby Galvin were named as the respective MASCAC Men’s Cross Country Runner and Rookie of the Week for their efforts in leading the Buccaneers to the team title at the 10th Annual Lt. Travis J. Fuller Invitational that took place on campus last Saturday morning.  MacVarish, a native of Braintree, Mass. and a graduate of Norfolk County Agricultural High School who earned three MASCAC Rookie of the Week citations in 2013, captured top individual honors in the race with a time of 27:50 over the five mile layout, while Galvin, a native of Woburn, Mass. and a graduate of Woburn Memorial High School, was the runner-up in the event with a time of 28:01.  The duo helped lead Head Coach Chris Ryan’s squad to a near perfect score of 16 points and Massachusetts Maritime’s second Fuller Invitational team championship in program history.

Additionally, freshman Stephanie Hunt was tabbed as the MASCAC Women’s Soccer Rookie of the Week for her efforts in the Buccaneers’ 6-0 non-league victory at Pine Manor last Saturday afternoon.  A native of Brookfield, Conn. and a graduate of Brookfield High School, Hunt notched a first half goal and assist for three points on offense while making a pair of saves in net over the final 45 minutes of action to help complete the shutout.

Massachusetts Maritime returns to action in women’s soccer on Thursday evening when the Buccaneers open their home schedule by entertaining Anna Maria in a non-league match at Clean Harbors Stadium beginning at 7:00 p.m. EDT, while the men’s cross country squad will be idle until Saturday, September 20th when Ryan’s crew heads to North Dartmouth, Mass. to participate in the UMass Dartmouth Buddy Harris Invitational that begins at 11:15 a.m. EDT.
