WESTFIELD, Mass. -- Freshman Kelsey Murray (Hanson, Mass.) netted a goal and an assist to lead Westfield State to an 8-0 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference women’s soccer victory over Massachusetts Maritime Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.
The host Owls (6-0-1, 1-0 MASCAC) took control of the match by scoring five times in the opening 26-plus minutes of play, as seniors Colleen Bazinet (Charlton, Mass.), Brittanie McGregor (Ludlow, Mass.) and Kayley Miller (Ludlow, Mass.), along with freshmen Ashley Bovat (Westfield, Mass.) and Marisa Sprague (Dalton, Mass.) each tallied in that time span. Murray and sophomore Emily Malone (Grafton, Mass.) added markers just 49 seconds apart late in the half for a 7-0 Westfield State advantage at the break, and freshman Emily Carroll’s (Douglas, Mass.) goal with 6:43 remaining closed out the scoring.
Junior Jess Habif (Holliston, Mass.) picked up the win without having to make a first half save for the Owls, who had all 29 shots on net for the contest. Freshman Katie Levesque (Wilmot, N.H.) suffered the setback in goal for the visiting Buccaneers (0-4, 0-1 MASCAC) with an 11-save effort.
Massachusetts Maritime hosts Coast Guard in a non-league outing on Tuesday evening at Clean Harbors Stadium beginning at 7:00 p.m., while Westfield State heads to Willimantic, Conn. on Tuesday evening to take on Eastern Connecticut in a non-league contest that also begins at 7:00 p.m.
