SALEM, Mass.-- Senior Keira Lyons (Salem, Mass.) netted a pair of goals and added an assist for five points, while sophomore Katy Verrette (Saugus, Mass.) added a pair of markers to lift Salem State to a 6-0 victory over Massachusetts Maritime in the Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference women's soccer opener for both squads Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.

Lyons staked the host Vikings (5-0-1, 1-0 MASCAC) to a 2-0 lead with her tallies in the first 17:23 of play, and freshman Cayla Aylward's (Groveland, Mass.) goal 29 seconds before halftime extended that margin to 3-0 at the break. Sophomore Adele Pasquariello (Saugus, Mass.) gave Salem State a 4-0 edge with a goal in the 53rd minute of play, and Verrette closed out the scoring for the hosts with markers that came less than five minutes apart to account for the final margin.

Freshman Leah Potcner (Wilmington, Mass.) picked up the win in goal without making a save on the day for the Vikings, while freshman Colleen Fissette (Dracut, Mass.) made a career-high 20 stops in net in the setback for the visiting Buccaneers (1-4, 0-1 MASCAC) as Salem State had all 38 shots on goal for the contest.

Massachusetts Maritime will be idle until next Saturday afternoon when the Buccaneers travel to Framingham, Mass. for a MASCAC outing with Framingham State that begins at 2:00 p.m., while Salem State travels to Wenham, Mass. on Thursday afternoon to take on Gordon in a non-league contest at 3:30 p.m.
