BUZZARDS BAY, Mass.-- Senior Colleen Welsh's (Shelton, Conn.) goal with 1:01 remaining in the second overtime lifted Massachusetts Maritime to a 2-1 non-league victory over Newbury in its inaugural collegiate women's soccer varsity contest Saturday afternoon at Commander Ellis Field.

Welsh's heroics came in the waning moments of the second extra session for the host Buccaneers (1-0), as she converted feeds from sophomore Ashley England (Hanover, Mass.) and freshman Rebecca Luciani (Wakefield, Mass.) on the deciding tally to present Head Coach Christine McCarey with her first collegiate triumph. Massachusetts Maritime grabbed a 1-0 advantage in the 22nd minute of action when England tipped home a Welsh shot in front of the cage, but the visiting Nighthawks (0-1) evened matters just 2:01 into the second session on freshman Jessica Graus's (Rochester, N.Y.) direct kick, setting up Welsh's marker in the overtime period.

Freshman Emily Welsh (Shelton, Conn.) picked up her first collegiate win in goal for the Buccaneers with a four-save effort on the afternoon, while junior Anastasia Tridenti (Gloucester, R.I.) made 20 stops in net for Newbury as Massachusetts Maritime outshot the Nighthawks by a 35-8 margin, including 29-5 in regulation and 6-3 in overtime.

Massachusetts Maritime heads to Leicester, Mass. on Wednesday afternoon to take on Becker in a non-league match that begins at 4:00 p.m., while Newbury hosts Nichols in a non-league outing on Tuesday afternoon in Brookline, Mass. at 3:30 p.m.
