Buccaneers Secure Victory in High Scoring Affair

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass – Wednesday evening, the 2-1 Buccaneer women's lacrosse team hosted Rhode Island College in a non-conference showdown at Clean Harbors Stadium. In what was a thrilling 33-goal evening, the Buccaneers came out victorious, 19-14.

Inside The Numbers

For The Bucs

  • Junior captain Anna Deely (Barnstable, Mass) scored five times to lead the Buccaneers and recorded two assists. Deely also won four draw controls and picked up four ground balls.
  • Junior captain Casey Sullivan (Sagamore Beach, Mass) scored four times and tallied an assist. Sullivan won a game-high 12 draw controls
  • Senior captain Cammi Balentine (Haverhill, Mass) scored twice and assisted on two other goals.
  • Senior Heather Seggelin (Sharon, Mass) scored twice in the win.
  • Sophomores Alyssa Blumenthal (Braintree, Mass) and Nora McLaughlin (Quincy, Mass) both scored two goals. Blumenthal also tied a career high in the game with six assists and set a career-high and game-high by picking up 10 ground balls.
  • Freshmen Grace Calvert (Windsor, Mass) and Paige Albertson (Nantucket, Mass) each scored once in the win.
  • Junior Jennifer Leung (Quincy, Mass) caused five turnovers on the day and picked up eight ground balls.
  • Freshman goalkeeper Aviva Beringhause (Providence, R.I.) picked up the win between the pipes. She allowed four goals and made four saves on eight shots faced.

 

For The Anchormen

  • Olivia Carpenito led all scorers in the game with eight goals while also recording an assists. She also won eight draw controls and picked up five ground balls.
  • Ashley Rewers and Giana Ritchie both scored twice for RIC. Rewers also tallied an assist.
  • Sydney Homan rounded out the scoring for RIC in the loss.
  • Hanna Ambrosia picked up a team-high six ground balls in the game.
  • Natalie Kulacz caused a team-high two turnovers in the loss.
  • Freshman goalkeeper Shannon Duckworth allowed 19 goals and made 10 saves on 29 shots faced in the game.

 

How It Happened

The Anchormen took a quick 2-0 lead in the first on Carpenito and Ritchie goals within the first five minutes. Over the next 11 minute, the Bucs went on a three goal run with Deely, Sullivan and Blumenthal scoring, to take a 3-2 lead halfway through the first half. Carpenito tied the game up at 3-3 on a man-up free position shot with 11 minutes left in the first half. The Bucs scored the next two goals, from the sticks of McLaughlin and Balentine, taking a 5-3 lead. Carpenito scored again for RIC to cut the Buc lead to one. In the final five minutes of the first half McLaughlin scored her second and Albertson scored her lone goal to give the Bucs a three-goal, 7-4 lead, heading in to the half.

After the break the Bucs busted the lead open, scoring four unanswered goals in the first four minutes of the second half. Blumenthal and Deely scored less than two minutes in then, thanks to two yellow cards to the Anchormen, Sullivan scored twice on man-up opportunities. Over the following two minutes, RIC found momentum and scored four unanswered of their own in rapid fire fashion. Less than seven minutes in to the second half the 7-4 half time score ballooned to an 11-7 score with Maritime still leading. Once again, Maritime went on a four-goal run, including two more man-up goals, in less than three minutes, giving the hosts a 15-8 advantage with 19:41 left in regulation. In the finl third of the game, Rhode Island went on to outscore the Buccaneers 6-4 including back to back goals with five minutes to play and again with around a minute left in the game. Thankfully, a last minute, man-down goal from Sullivan and an already sizable lead, the Buccaneers were able to hang on to the game, winning by what many would consider to be a football score, 19-14.
