Buccaneers Plundered by Mariners at Home

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass – Saturday morning, the Buccaneers hosted the US Merchant Marine Academy at Clean Harbors Stadium. The 3-0 Mariners came out hot, scoring early and often, taking the victory 16-1 over the Bucs.

Sophomore attacker Casey Sullivan (Sagamore Beach, Mass) was responsible for the lone Maritime goal in the game on an assist from Cammi Balentine (Haverhill, Mass). Overall, the Bucs only took 11 total shots, two in the first half, and nine in the second half, with six of those shots on target. Goalie Laua Kleber (Wetport, Mass) faced a strong, fast Merchant Marine attack, allowing the 16 goals and making 6 saves on 22 shots.

The Mariners spread the scoring around with eight players scoring, five scoring multiple times. Senior Meredith Willard (Portland, Maine) led the way with four goals and an assist. Jessie Wohner (Norfolk, Va) added three goals of her own. Junior midfielder Angela Parker (Bowie, Md) assisted on three goals with two other Mariners assisting on multiple goals. Goalie Hannah Gizzi (Finksburg, Md) saved five of the six shots she faced in the game.

Merchant Marine score two minutes in to the game on a Willard free position goal. Ten minutes in to the game, USMMA saw their lead grow to seven goals. At the ten minute mark of the first half, the Mariners had added four more goals. With a running clock from the remainder of the half, and what ended up being the remainder of the game, they scored three more in the half, taking a 14-0 advantage to the halftime break.

In the second half, with the clock running, the Mariners got their shots in, finding the back of the net two more times. With under 30 seconds left in the game, Sullivan, by way of Balentine, found the back of the net to erase the shutout. The game ended in favor of the Mariners, 16-1.

The Buccaneers are back on the field at Clean Harbors Stadium tomorrow afternoon at 1pm against NVU-Lyndon.
