McCabe Sets Maritime Record, Driver Wins in T&F Meet

Mansfield, Connecticut – Youngie Colin McCabe set a school record in the shot put, while John Driver won the 3000 meter steeplechase as the Massachusetts Maritime Academy men's and women's track and field teams opened their 2018 seasons at the Eastern Connecticut State University Early Invitational on Friday.

The women's team fell short in scoring, however the young team consisting of three now-veteran sophomores, one rookie sophomore, and two first-years fared well. Captain Michelle Sheehan ran the 200m in 30.16 with Emma Sullivan at 32.17. In the 1500 meters Meaghan Hamilton ran 5:51.63 while Heather Seggelin ran 6:24.84, with the former placing in the Top 10. Sheehan was tenth in the 400m at 1:21.65.

In the throwing events, Christine Murray competed in the shot put with a 7.41 meters mark and Michelle Campbell joined her at 5.99 meters. Murray also threw the discus 22.68 meters, with Michelle Sheehan at 15.32 meters.

For the men, the Buccaneers placed fourth out of eight teams with 58 points. Freshman Colin McCabe started the meet with a New England qualifier first place finish and a new school record in the shot put with 13.96 meters and freshman Cole Mottl placing 6th with 11.8 meters.

In the running events, John Driver won the 3000 meter steeplechase (12:11.39), followed by second place Zach Ferreira (12:38.72). Monahan placed third in the 110 meter high hurdles with 17.55. Captain Chris MacKay was sixth in the 1500 meters (4:39.60).

The javelin had three men place, Michael Monahan in fourth (39.07 meters), Captain Mitch Conroy in fifth (38.42 meters), and David Moore one behind him (38.09 meters). The discus had two men place, with Conroy taking third (33.73 meters) and Max Kane only one place behind him (31.63 meters). Junior Westen Dennett placed sixth in the triple jump with 10.64 meters while freshman Ethan Cummings placed fourth in the long jump with 5.89 meters.
