NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. --  Both Massachusetts Maritime outdoor track & field squads enjoyed solid performances in competition at the UMass Dartmouth Corsair Classic on Sunday afternoon, as the Buccaneers recorded 12th place team finishes on both the men’s and women’s side.

 

Freshman Frank Mesa (Hialeah, Fla.) posted a fifth place finish in the long jump (5.83 meters/19 feet, 1 ½ inches) to lead the way for the Massachusetts Maritime men, while junior Mitch Conroy (Brooklyn, Conn.) added a sixth place finish in the discus with a mark of 36.37 meters (119 feet, 4 inches).  Freshman Douglas Cleary (Pocasset, Mass.) placed sixth in the 10,000 meters with a time of 40:05.03, while junior Ian Chester (Rockland, Mass.) set a school record in the 110 meter hurdles with a seventh place time of 16.56.  Freshman Jack Koss (Falmouth, Mass.) added a 10th place performance in the triple jump (10.36 meters/34 feet) for the Buccaneers, while the 4 x 100 meter relay team consisting of Chester, Mesa and sophomores Cal Garufo (Winthrop, Mass.) and Bryan Connors (Hanover, Mass.) finished fourth with a time of 46.13.  Host UMass Dartmouth took top honors in the men’s team competition with a score of 116 points, while Bridgewater State (100) and Coast Guard (78) finished in the respective runner-up and third place spots.

 

Junior Jessica Gratzer (Pembroke, Mass.) paced Massachusetts Maritime in the women’s competition by posting a sixth place finish in the shot put (10.58 meters/34 feet, 8 ½ inches), while freshman Michelle Sheehan (Attleboro, Mass.) was eighth in the 400 meter hurdles (1:17.63) and set a school record in the 100 meters with a time of 14.28.  Senior Emma Ethier (Norton, Mass.) also set a school record in the 100 meter high hurdles with a ninth place time of 17:52 for the Buccaneers, and she was part of a school-record setting 4 x 100 meter relay that also included Sheehan, sophomore Sara Merzon (Rockland, Mass.) and freshman Emma Sullivan (Weymouth, Mass.), as the quartet posted a seventh place time of 56.97 in the event to better the previous school mark set in 2012.  Trinity captured top honors on the women’s side with a team score of 135 points, as Bridgewater State (114.5) and UMass Dartmouth (106.5) claimed the runner-up and third place positions.

 

Massachusetts Maritime heads to Weston, Mass. on Friday afternoon to compete at the Regis Spring Classic beginning at 3:30 p.m.
