MANSFIELD, Conn. --  The Massachusetts Maritime outdoor track & field team recorded 18 top 10 individual performances and recorded a pair of top five finishes in competition on Friday afternoon at the 10th Annual Eastern Connecticut Invitational.

 

Freshman Michelle Sheehan (Attleboro, Mass.) placed third in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:16.91 on the women’s side for the Buccaneers, who received a fifth place performance in the 100 meter hurdles (17.55) from senior Emma Ethier (Norton, Mass.).  The women’s 4 x 400 meter relay team consisting of Ethier, Sheehan and freshmen Meaghan Hamilton (Braintree, Mass.) and Emma Sullivan (Weymouth, Mass.) posted a school record time of 4:47.89 while finishing fourth in the event.

 

On the men’s side, freshman Jack Koss (Falmouth, Mass.) posted a fourth place finish in the 110 meter hurdles (18.62) while adding a ninth place performance in the long jump (5.66 meters/18 feet, 7 inches) for Massachusetts Maritime, while sophomore John Driver (Williamstown, Mass.) notched a fourth place finish in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a time of 11:31.32.  Sophomore Cal Garufo (Winthrop, Mass.) and freshmen Esmael Mendes (Cataumet, Mass.) recorded respective fifth place finishes in the 400 meters (58.93) and 5,000 meters (22:31.05) for the Buccaneers, who received a sixth place performance in the 400 meters (59.01) from junior Joe Eastman (Hanover, Mass.).

 

Freshman Frank Mesa (Hialeah, Fla.) notched respective seventh and eighth place finishes in the 100 meters (11.71) and long jump (5.84 meters/19 feet, 2 inches), while fellow freshman Anderson Melendez (Santa Clara, Calif.) was seventh in the 200 meters (25.66) and 10th in the 100 meters (12.16) for Massachusetts Maritime.  Junior Chris MacKay (Bethany, Conn.) and freshman Aaron Diauto (Pembroke, Mass.) posted respective seventh place performances in the 1,500 meters (4:29.17) and 400 meter hurdles (1:05.32) on the afternoon, while sophomore Bryan Connors (Hanover, Mass.) and freshman David Moore (Newbury, Mass.) recorded eighth place finishes in the 200 meters (25.72) and javelin (32.58 meters/106 feet, 11 inches).  Freshmen Steven Savoy (West Bridgewater, Mass.) and Shane O’Neill (Georgetown, Mass.) rounded out the Buccaneer top 10 performances with respective ninth place finishes in the 1,500 meters (4:37.65) and 400 meter hurdles (1:06.58).

 

The men’s 4 x100 meter relay squad comprised of Melendez, Garufo, Diauto and Mesa placed second with a time of 26.48, while the 4 x 400 meter “A” relay team consisting of Garufo, Diauto, MacKay and senior Tyler Aldrich (Mashpee, Mass.) finished fifth with a time of 3:48.42.  The Buccaneer 4 x 400 meter “B” relay quartet of Savoy and fellow freshmen Ryan Burns (Plymouth, Mass.), Parker Brassard (Plainfield, Conn.) and Ryan Welsh (Washington, Conn.) placed fifth with a time of 4:02.06.

 

Bridgewater State took top honors in both competitions over runner-up Franklin Pierce, while Eastern Connecticut finished in third place on both sides.

 

Massachusetts Maritime heads to Westfield, Mass. next Saturday, April 29th to compete at the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference & New England Alliance Championships hosted by Westfield State on the Jerry Gravel Track beginning at 11:00 a.m.
