Chester Sets Record Setting Pace For Outdoor Track & Field At Connecticut College Silfen Invitational

NEW LONDON, Conn. --  Junior Ian Chester (Rockland, Mass.) qualified for the New England Division III championships with a record-setting performance in the 110 meter hurdles to lead the way for the Massachusetts Maritime outdoor track & field squad in competition at the Connecticut College Silfen Invitational Saturday afternoon.

 

Chester posted a school-record time of 16.34 to finish fourth in the 110 meter hurdles for the Buccaneers, as he added another fourth place performance in the javelin with a mark of 48.36 meters.  Senior Emma Ethier (Norton, Mass.) broke her own school record in the 100 meter hurdles with a ninth place time of 17.35 in the event, while junior Jessica Gratzer (Pembroke, Mass.) notched a ninth place performance in the shot put with a mark of 10.79 meters.  Senior Tyler Aldrich (Mashpee, Mass.) posted the third school record effort of the afternoon for Massachusetts Maritime, as he ran a time of 2:06.44 in the 800 meters.

 

The Buccaneer 4 x 800 meter relay team consisting of Aldrich, junior Chris MacKay (Bethany, Conn.) and freshmen David Moore (Newbury, Mass.) and Parker Brassard (Plainfield, Conn.) recorded a runner-up finish in the event with a time of 9:06.60, while the 4 x 400 meter relay squad comprised of junior Joe Eastman (Hanover, Mass.) and freshmen Ryan Welsh (Washington, Conn.), Ryan Burns (Plymouth, Mass.) and Shane O’Neill (Georgetown, Mass.) posted an eighth place time of 3:59.54.

 

Franklin Pierce took top honors in the men’s competition with a score of 181 points to nearly double runner-up Bentley’s total, while host Connecticut College claimed the women’s crown with a 17 ½ point triumph over runner-up Trinity.

 

Massachusetts Maritime heads back to the Nutmeg State next Friday afternoon when the Buccaneers compete at the Eastern Connecticut Invitational in Mansfield, Conn. beginning at 2:00 p.m.
