Outdoor Track & Field Records 32 Top 10 Performances In Busy Weekend Of Competition At Eastern Connecticut, Tufts

MANSFIELD, Conn./MEDFORD, Mass. --  The Massachusetts Maritime outdoor track & field team combined to record 32 top 10 finishes in competition at the Eastern Connecticut Invitational on Friday afternoon and at the Tufts Sunshine Classic on Saturday, as the Buccaneers notched three individual first place finishes along the way.

 

Sophomore Ian Chester (Rockland, Mass.) took top honors in the javelin (52.37 meters/171 feet, 10 inches) and recorded a runner-up finish in the 110 meter high hurdles (17.14) at Eastern Connecticut, while freshman Chris Winbourne (Wrentham, Mass.) notched three top seven finishes in the Nutmeg State by claiming the crown in the discus (39.44 meters/129 feet, 5 inches), placing fourth in the shot put (11.88 meters/38 feet, 11 ¾ inches) and recording a seventh place finish in the javelin (42.65 meters/139 feet, 11 inches). 

 

Junior Emma Ethier (Norton, Mass.) posted a second place performance in the triple jump (9.17 meters) for Massachusetts Maritime in competition at Eastern Connecticut, and she added a fourth place finish in the 100 meter high hurdles (17.41).  Sophomore Joseph Carey (Pembroke, Mass.) added three top 10 finishes for the Buccaneers by placing 3rd in the 110 meter high hurdles (18.64), fourth in the javelin (45.33 meters/148 feet, 9 inches) and 10th in the 100 meters (12.07), while freshman Cal Garufo (Winthrop, Mass.) placed fifth in the triple jump (10.17 meters/33 feet, 4 ½ inches) and sixth in the 400 meters (58.90) on Friday.

 

Sophomore Mitch Conroy (Brooklyn, Conn.) added a pair of top 10 finishes by placing fourth in the discus (35.02 meters/114 feet, 11 inches) and 10th in the javelin (37.42 meters/122 feet, 9 inches) for the Buccaneers, while sophomore Chris MacKay (Bethany, Conn.) was eighth in the 1,500 meters (4:36.56) at Eastern Connecticut.  Senior Peter Schultz (Wilbraham, Mass.) recorded a pair of ninth place performances in the 200 meters (25.28) and long jump (5.10 meters/16 feet, 8 ¾ inches) on Friday afternoon, while freshman Cole Kugler (Woodstown, N.J.) and sophomore John Kelly (Sanbornton, N.H.) notched respective ninth and 10th place finishes in the 400 meters (1:02.78) and shot put (10.55 meters/34 feet, 7 ¾ inches).

 

Junior Meaghan Brain (Hanson, Mass.) led the way at Tufts with a first place performance in the javelin (31.75 meters/104 feet, 2 inches) for Massachusetts Maritime, which also received respective fourth and fifth place finishes from Chester in the 110 high hurdles (18.68) and javelin (40.97 meters/134 feet, 5 inches).  Ethier placed fourth in the 100 meter high hurdles (17.95) and eighth in the triple jump (8.94 meters/29 feet, 4 inches) on Saturday afternoon, while Conroy was seventh in the shot put (11.35 meters/37 feet, 3 inches) and 10th in the discus (34.97 meters/114 feet, 9 inches) on the day.

 

MacKay and freshman Nathaniel Decker (Bellbrook, Ohio) posted respective seventh (10:53.62) and eighth (11:28.13) place finishes in the 3,000 meter steeplechase for the Buccaneers, who also received a seventh place finish from senior Bryce MacAndrew (Warwick, R.I.) in the hammer throw (39.18 meters/128 feet, 6 inches) and an eighth place performance from Winbourne (11.08 meters/36 feet, 4 ¼ inches) in the shot put at Tufts.  Massachusetts Maritime also recorded a second place finish in the 4 x 100 meter relay (47.56) from the tandem of Chester, Garufo, sophomore Joe Eastman (Hanover, Mass.) and freshman Bryan Connors (Hanover, Mass.), while the 4 x 400 relay consisting of Eastman, Garufo, junior Luke Kurelja (Bloomsburg, Pa.) and freshman Conor Duffy (Somerset, Mass.) placed second with a time of 3:36.00.

 

The Buccaneer men finished third at Eastern Connecticut and fifth overall at Tufts in the final standings, as the homestanding Warriors and Jumbos took top honors in their respective competitions.  The Buccaneer women placed fourth and seventh in the two weekend events, as Bridgewater State claimed the crown at Eastern Connecticut while Tufts also captured first place on Saturday.

 

Massachusetts Maritime heads to North Dartmouth, Mass. next Saturday afternoon to compete at the 2016 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference/New England Alliance Championships hosted by UMass Dartmouth beginning at 11:00 a.m.
