Poh's Runner-Up Finish In Discus Highlights Solid Performance By Outdoor Track & Field At MASCAC Championships

NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. --  Junior Zachary Poh (Bridgewater, Mass.) posted a runner-up individual finish in the discus to highlight Massachusetts Maritime’s performance at the 2014 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference/New England Alliance Championships hosted by UMass Dartmouth on Sunday afternoon.

 

Poh recorded a toss of 43.18 meters (141 feet, 8 inches) to qualify for the Division III New Englands, as he added a 10th place finish in the shot put (11.86 meters) on the day.  Junior Sam Hill (Hopkinton, N.H.) placed fifth in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 59.11 for the Buccaneers, who also received a sixth place finish in the javelin from fellow junior Danielle Soar (Templeton, Mass.) of 31.19 meters.

 

Senior Steven Ellershaw (Chester, Mass.) and freshman Meaghan Brain (Hanson, Mass.) recorded seventh place performances in their respective javelin events of 44.95 and 30.50 meters, while sophomore Bryce MacAndrew (Warwick, R.I.) added a seventh place finish in the hammer throw (38.95 meters).  Soar broke her own school record with an eighth place finish in the hammer throw (35.09 meters) for Massachusetts Maritime, which also received a 10th place performance in the javelin from freshman Peter Hamill (Norton, Mass.) of 41.33 meters.  The Buccaneer 4 x 100 meter relay team placed third with a time of 45.16, while the 4 x 400 meter (3:36.23) and 4 x 800 meter (9:42.19) relay squads posted a pair of fifth place finishes on the day.

 

Westfield State took top honors in both the MASCAC competitions, as the Owl men posted a team score of 219 points to outdistance runner-up Bridgewater State’s total of 150 points.  Worcester State finished third with 150 points, while Fitchburg State and Massachusetts Maritime finished with 82 and 20 points, respectively.  The Westfield State women topped Worcester State by 32 points (224-192) on the women’s side, while Bridgewater State (167), Fitchburg State (48) and the Buccaneers (1) followed.

 

Massachusetts Maritime will compete next weekend at the Division III New England Championships hosted by Springfield College beginning at 10:00 a.m.
