Leonardi, Gratzer, Soar & Hill Tabbed As 2014 Outdoor Track & Field Captains

The Massachusetts Maritime outdoor track & field team has shined as one of the Academy’s top emerging programs, and the Buccaneers will look to continue that trend this season under the watch of Head Coach Cathy Lohse.  The veteran mentor is continuing preparations for the upcoming campaign and will look to four upperclassmen to provide leadership in the role of team captains this spring.

Lohse has named seniors Liz Leonardi (Sandwich, Mass./Sandwich) and Robert Gratzer (Pembroke, Mass./Pembroke), along with juniors Danielle Soar (Templeton, Mass./Narragansett) and Sam Hill (Hopkinton, N.H./Hopkinton) as Massachusetts Maritime’s captains for the 2014 season, as she describes the quartet as “extremely hard working, dedicated and committed to the long-term success of our program.  They have all set incredible examples in preparation, competition, the campus community and in their studies, and they will drive their teammates to achieve our goals.”

Leonardi, who also served as co-captain of the Buccaneer women’s cross country team this past fall, has been a standout distance performer in sprints during her career, and she joins Soar (throws) in holding a pair of school records.  Gratzer is coming off an impressive 2013 slate that saw him earn Division III All-New England and ECAC Division III honors in the discus while becoming the program’s first Open New England qualifier, while Hill has been a solid performer in sprints and hurdles and has also helped set relay records during his career.

Massachusetts Maritime is set to begin the 2014 season on Saturday, March 22nd at the Bridgewater State Bears Invitational at Swenson Track in Bridgewater, Mass. beginning at 9:00 a.m. EDT.
