NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. --  The Massachusetts Maritime outdoor track & field team recorded 14 top 10 finishes during competition on Saturday afternoon at the UMass Dartmouth Corsair Classic, as the Buccaneer men placed ninth of 14 teams while the Buccaneer women scored four points in the competition to place 13th overall.

 

Sophomore Zachary Poh (Bridgewater, Mass.) led the way with a runner-up finish in the discus (45.10 meters) while adding a fourth place finish in the shot put (13.70 meters), while fellow junior Kelci Sullivan (Hanson, Mass.) recorded a runner-up finish in the 10,000 meters with a time of 43:27.94.  Sophomore E.J. Bennett (East Wareham, Mass.) finished third in the high jump with a mark of 1.88 meters, while sophomore Tim Lawler (Newburyport, Mass.) recorded a fourth place performance in the javelin (47.04 meters).

 

Junior Robert Gratzer (Pembroke, Mass.) placed sixth in the discus (40.98 meters) and eighth in the hammer throw (37.05 meters) for Massachusetts Maritime, while sophomore Cody Carneiro (Wrentham, Mass.) was 7th in the javelin with a mark of 40.92 meters.  Junior Ted Mello (Acushnet, Mass.) and sophomore Sam Hill (Hopkinton, N.H.) notched respective eighth place finishes in the triple jump (11.20 meters) and 400 meter hurdles (1:01.18) for the Buccaneers, who also received a ninth place finish in the 3,000 meter steeplechase from senior Tom Turner (Westmoreland, N.H.) as well as 10th place performances from senior Eric Shea (Milton, Mass.) in the shot put (12.10 meters), sophomore Danielle Soar (Templeton, Mass.) in the hammer throw (31.39 meters) and freshman Brendan Smith (Dartmouth, Mass.) in the 110 meter hurdles (17.33).

 

The 4 x 100 meter relay team of Hill, Bennett, Smith and senior Laurence Tagger (Bourne, Mass.) finished fifth with a time of 45.67, while the 4 x 400 meter relay squad consisting of Hill, Bennett, senior Evan Balderelli (Brimfield, Mass.) and sophomore Godfred Mbengam (Randolph, Mass.) also placed fifth with a time of 3:33.27.

 

Bridgewater State edged UMass Dartmouth by three points (130-127) to take top honors on the men’s side, while the host Corsairs captured the women’s crown by three points (132-129) over Coast Guard.

 

Massachusetts Maritime will be idle until Saturday, April 20th when the Buccaneers travel to New London, Conn. to participate in the Connecticut College Silfen Invitational that begins at 10:00 a.m.
