School Records Fall For Outdoor Track & Field With Solid Performances At UMass Dartmouth Corsair Classic

NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. --  The Massachusetts Maritime outdoor track and field team recorded a pair of ninth place team finishes at the UMass Dartmouth Corsair Classic on Saturday afternoon, as the Buccaneer men posted a score of 26 points while the Buccaneer women’s quintet notched a team score of 15 points.

Sophomore Liz Leonardi (Sandwich, Mass.) placed third in the women’s 3,000 meter steeplechase in breaking her own school record with a time of 14:19.43, while sophomore Kelci Sullivan (Hanson, Mass.) finished fifth in the 1,500 meters with a time of 5:49.44.  Junior Laura Spalt (Harwichport, Mass.) added an eighth place performance in the 100 meter hurdles for the Buccaneers with a time of 18.59.

Freshman E.J. Bennett (East Wareham, Mass.) and senior Chris Sullo (Canton, Mass.) paced competition on the men’s side for Massachusetts Maritime by placing fifth and sixth, respectively, in the high jump with marks of 1.85 and 1.80 meters, while junior Evan Balderelli (Brimfield, Mass.) was sixth in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:00.40.  Freshman Sam Hill (Hopkinton, N.H.) set a school record with a seventh place finish in the 110 meter hurdles (17.86), while senior James Hutchinson (Pembroke, Mass.) added a seventh place performance in the javelin (49.46 meters). 

Senior Kevin Quinn (Barrington, R.I.) added a school record mark in the hammer throw (38.35 meters), as he teamed with fellow senior Chris Dintino (Mashpee, Mass.) to finish ninth and 10th (37.55 meters), respectively, for the Buccaneers in the event.  Freshman Godfred Mbengam (Randolph, Mass.) finished ninth in the 400 meters (53.22) for Massachusetts Maritime, while Sullo and junior Laurence Tagger (Bourne, Mass.) placed ninth and 10th, respectively, in the long jump with marks of 5.63 and 5.58 meters.

Senior Joe Choiniere (Mansfield, Mass.) recorded the final top 10 finish of the day for the Buccaneers in the 200 meters (23.89), and he added a school record performance in the 100 meters with an 11th place mark of 11.62 seconds.

Massachusetts Maritime heads to Amherst, Mass. next Saturday morning to compete at the UMass Amherst Minuteman Invitational that begins at 11:30 a.m.
