BRIDGEWATER, Mass. --  The Massachusetts Maritime outdoor track & field team opened its 2012 season with solid individual performances at the non-scoring Bridgewater State Invitational Saturday afternoon at the Swenson Field Track.

Senior James Hutchinson (Pembroke, Mass.) posted the top individual performance of the day for the Buccaneers with a second place finish in the javelin (52.84 meters), while fellow senior Chris Sullo (Canton, Mass.) added a third place finish in the high jump (1.90 meters) and a fourth place finish in the triple jump (12.44 meters).  Freshman Mariah McGrath (Mansfield, Mass.) was third in the long jump (2.85 meters) on the day, while sophomore Robert Gratzer (Pembroke, Mass.) placed third in the discus (41.82 meters) and sixth in the shot put (12.72 meters) for Massachusetts Maritime, which also received a pair of fifth place finishes in the 100 meter hurdles from junior Laura Spalt (Harwichport, Mass.) and sophomore Liz Leonardi (Sandwich, Mass.) in the 3,000 meter steeplechase (14:24.90).

Sullo was one of six Buccaneers to place in the top 10 in the long jump, as senior Joe Choiniere (Mansfield, Mass.) led the pack with a fifth place performance of 5.68 meters), while the tandem of freshman Sam Hill (Hopkinton, N.H.) and junior Evan Balderelli (Brimfield, Mass.) finished sixth and seventh, respectively, in the 400 meter hurdles with times of 1:02.00 and 1:02.07.  Senior Chris Dintino (Mashpee, Mass.) and freshman Tim Lawler (Newburyport, Mass.) added a pair of seventh place finishes in Massachusetts Maritime’s season debut in the hammer throw (37.52 meters) and javelin (43.26 meters), respectively.

Massachusetts Maritime returns to action on Saturday, April 7th by heading to North Dartmouth, Mass. to compete at the UMass Dartmouth Corsair Classic that begins at 11:00 a.m.
