DEDHAM, Mass. --  The Massachusetts Maritime outdoor track & field team began its 2011 season with solid individual performances at the non-scoring Northeastern Husky Spring Open on Saturday afternoon.

Senior Rory O’Donnell (Somerset, Mass.) and junior Chris Sullo (Canton, Mass.), the reigning MASCAC champions in the triple jump and high jump, respectively, picked up where they left off from last season for the Buccaneers, as Sullo was third in the high jump (1.88 meters) and seventh in the triple jump (12.30 meters) while O’Donnell finished fifth in the high jump (1.78 meters) and sixth in the triple jump (13.08 meters).  Senior Jason McWhirter (Melvin Village, N.H.) and sophomore Rob Bergonzi (Quincy, Mass.) also posted a top tandem finish for Massachusetts Maritime in the 3,000 meter steeplechase by placing sixth (11:56.88) and eighth (12:41.87), respectively, in the event.

Senior Meredith Hall (Duxbury, Mass.) also picked up where she left off last season with a ninth place finish in the javelin (32.85 meters), while junior Mike Bois (Lakeville, Mass.) and freshman Robert Gratzer (Pembroke, Mass.) posted 10th place performances in the long jump (5.60 meters) and discus (35.63 meters), respectively.

The Buccaneers were also solid in relays on the day, as the men’s 4 X 400 tandem of O’Donnell, seniors Anthony Venterosa (Stoughton, Mass.) and Jon White (Lynnfield, Mass.) as well as sophomore Gabriel Bermudez (Guaynabo, P.R.) finished second with a time of 3:40.71, while the men’s 4 X 100 contingent of Bois, sophomores Michael Temple (Weymouth, Mass.) and Laurence Tagger (Bourne, Mass.) as well as senior Joseph Choiniere (Mansfield, Mass.) finished fifth with a time of 46.77.

Massachusetts Maritime returns to action next Saturday morning by heading to Bridgewater, Mass. to participate in the Bridgewater State Bears Invitational that begins at 11:00 a.m.
