Buccaneers Split Doubleheader with AMCATS

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass – Maritime hosted the Anna Maria College AMCATS on Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference doubleheader that was added to their schedule late in the season. The AMCATS took game one, 7-4. The Bucs won game two, 6-2.

Game One

How It Happened

The first five innings of game one were a pitcher's duel between the two teams. The most notable action of the first five innings, besides the pitching performances was AMCAT Sabrina Carrreira (West Hartford, Conn) recording her 100^th career hit in the first inning.

Both teams threatened multiple times at the beginning of the game, but neither team was able to capitalize, until the sixth inning. In the top of the sixth, the AMCATS scored all seven of their runs. The scoring began on a fielder's choice with the bases loaded, bringing in Victoria Falco (Marlborough, Mass) to score the game's first run. Later in the inning, Ashley Garcia (Cornwall, N.Y.) doubled to left field, bringing in two runs. Up 4-0, senior Kayla Magierowski (Brimfield, Penn) hit a two RBI single to left plating Garcia and Carreira. Magierowski would later score on a Falco single for the final run of the inning and the game for Anna Maria.

With two innings to play, the Bucs answered in both, scoring one run in the bottom of the sixth on a Meghan Reilly (Pawling, N.Y.) ground out to second base which Savanna Leite (New Bedford, Mass) came in to score on.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, Maritime mounted a comeback attempt, scoring three runs, two on a Madison Ovadek (Greenland, N.H.) double of the wall in left field. The extra base hit scored Malarie Pittsley (Dighton, Mass) and Rachel Gardner (Bourne, Mass). The three runs weren't enough and the Bucs dropped game one, 7-4.

At The Plate

Maritime racked up eight hits in an 8-for-29 performance at the plate in game one. Pittsley had three of the Buc hits. Gardner and Ovadek added two each.

Ovadek drove in two runs for Maritime.

Pittsley and Ovadek had the two extra base hits, both doubles.

The Bucs walked four times, struck out five times and left nine runners on base.

Anna Maria batted 14-for-35 in game one. Carreira went 4-for-4 with three singles and a double, as well as her 100^th career hit in the first inning. Falco had three hits of her own. Allison Sholds (Methuen, Mass) and Michelle Cilley (Dracut, Mass) each had two hits.

Garcia and Magierowski each drove in two runs.

AMC didn't walk in the game, struck out six times, which is a season high in a single game for Nalette, and the 'Cats left eight runners on base.

Game Two

How It Happened

Maritime scored first in game two in the bottom of the second inning. The run came on an AMCAT miscue allowing Camryn Roberts-Capak (Marstons Mills, Mass) to reach base and Savanna Leite (New Bedford, Mass) to score.

The AMCATS tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the third and a Buccaneer error, allowing Sabrina Carreira (West Hartford, Mass) to reach base, plating Cam Johnson (Worcester, Mass). The Bucs took the lead back, this time by two runs, 3-1, in the bottom of the third frame. The first run on a Leite single to right bringing in Madison Ovadek (Greenland, N.H.). The second run same in in the form of Jenna Nalette (Goffstown, N.H.) on a double steal I nwhich Nalette stole home and Leite was caught stealing.

Down 3-2, Anna Maria pulled within one in the top of the fourth when Michelle Cilley (Dracut, Mass) singled, scoring pinch runner Journey Hineline (Pen Argyl, Penn).

With a 3-2 advantage, the Buccaneers had the win in the bag as they would keep the 'Cats off the board the rest of the game but padded their lead with two runs in the bottom of the fifth, another in the sixth. Pittsley scored the team's fourth run on an AMCAT error in the fifth, the fifth Buc run came in on an Emily Goodwin (Halifax, Mass) single, scoring Leite. Their sixth and final run scored in the sixth on a wild pitch, Roberts-Capak crossed home. After losing game one, the Bucs split the doubleheader with a 6-2 victory in game two.

All but one Buccaneer in the lineup had a hit in the game.

The Bucs walked twice, struck out twice and left six runners on.

Anna Maria batted 8-for-30 in game two. Cilley and MacKenzie Morin (North Smithfield, R.I.) each had two hits for the visitors. Cilley also drove in a run.

The AMCATS walked once, struckout once and left seven runs on base.

Up Next: The Buccaneers travel to Rivier University on Wednesday evening to take on the Raiders in non-conference play. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 5pm.
