Bucs drop a Pair to the Bears

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass – Maritime hosted Bridgewater State Tuesday in a weekday conference series in Buzzards Bay. The Bucs dropped both games by mercy rule after five innings, 11-0 and 14-4.

 

Game One

How It Happened

Bridgewater scored four runs in the top of the first to set the tone of the game. Megan Sharon (East Longmeadow, Mass) started the scoring in the innings with a single, scoring Samantha Mulcahy (Taunton, Mass).

The Bears Shannon Grindle (Halifax, Mass) hit a two-run home run over the left field fence in the top of the second inning, scoring herself and Sharon to give BSU a 7-0 lead.

Needing just one run to make the game official, the Bears scored four runs in the top of the fourth innings. Bridgewater held the Bucs scoreless in the fourth and fifth to earn the 11-0, five inning victory in game one.

At The Plate

Maritime went 5-for-19 at the plate. Madison Ovadek (Greenland, N.H.) led the way with two hits, both singles.

The Buccaneers drew no walks, struck out just once and left six runners on base.

Bridgewater went 12-for-32 at the plate. Grindle and Meghan Navarro (Taunton, Mass) each went 3-for-4. Grindle drove in four runs, Navarro one. Each scored twice.

The Bears walked once, struck out once and left seven runners on base.

 

Game Two

How It Happened

Bridgewater picked up in game two where they left off in game one, scoring three times in the top of the first. They scored their first run on a double steal, Navarro stealing second, Mulcahy stealing home. The Bucs answered in the bottom of the frame, scoring twice, on a sacrifice fly by Ovadek, scoring Rachel Gardner (Bourne, Mass) and a wild pitch that score Lucia Buzzell (Quincy, Mass).

In the bottom of the second, Bridgewater extended their lead back to three, scoring twice, once on a Buccaneer miscue, the second on a Navarro sacrifice fly. Maritime answered once again in the bottom of the second scoring twice on a Malarie Pittsley (Dighton, Mass) double scoring Gardner and Meghan Reilly (Pawling, N.Y.).

Bridgewater plated four runs in the top of the third innings, the first on a home run by Jenny Heller (Taunton, Mass) to left center field. The Bears added an additional four runs in the fourth and another in the fifth, not allowing the Buccaneers to score again. At 14-4, BSU earned the win in game two and the conference sweep over the Bucs.

At The Plate

Maritime batted 2-for-17 in game two. Gardner and Pittsley each had a hit. Pittsley drove in two runs for the Bucs.

Gardner scored twice in the game on one hit.

Maritime walked four times in the game, striking out on three occasions and left three runners on base.

Bridgewater batted 15-for-31. Seven hitters recorded two hits in the game for the visitors.

Hatch drove in three runs, two others drove in two runs each. Four different players scored twice for the Bears.

BSU drew three walks, struck out just once and left six runners on base.
