Hawks Sweep Bucs in Non-Conference Doubleheader

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass – Thursday afternoon, the Buccaneers hosted the Becker College Hawks in a non-conference matchup prior to a MASCAC meeting with Salem State on Saturday. Though the Buccaneers played their first complete game of the season, they were swept by Becker 10-1 in five innings and 9-2.

 

Game One

How It Happened

Becker scored first in the top of the first, plating three runs one two singles and the third on a misplayed first and third, double steal play by Becker.

Down 3-0, Lucia Buzzell (Quincy, Mass) recorded the first and only hit of the game for the Bucs, a triple to score Rachel Gardner (Bourne, Mass).

The Hawks scored three more runs in the top of the fourth and closed the game out in the top of the fifth scoring four additional runs to win by mercy rule 10-1.

At The Plate

Buzzell had the lone hit, a triple, for the Bucs as they went 1-for-16 at the plate.

Maritime drew one walk and struck out once in game one, leaving two runners on base.

Becker went 16-for-33 at the plate. Lead-off hitter Alyssa Columb and Veillette each had three hits in the game. Three other players had two hits in the game for the visitors.

Vasia Murphy, Lauren Niemann and Veillette each had an extra base hit in the game, all doubles.

The Hawks drew one walk, struck out two time and left nine runner on base.

 

Game Two

How It Happened

The Buccaneers got on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the first scoring two runs. Rachel Gardner (Bourne, Mass) scored when Madison Ovadek (Greenland, N.H) reached base on an error by the right fielder. Savanna Leite (New Bedford, Mass) followed that up with an RBI single to right, scoring Ovadek.

The end of the first meant the end of the scoring for the Bucs. Up 2-0, Becker scored once in the top of the second to cut the Maritime lead in half. In the top of the third they tied the game at two apiece on a sacrifice fly.

The Hawks took the lead in the top of the fourth, 3-2. The top of the sixth was the big inning for the Hawks, scoring six times to take the eventual winning lead of 9-2.

The Buccaneers hit .250 in the game, 8-for-32. Pittsley and Savanna Leite (New Bedford, Mass) each had two hits in the game.

Leite drove in the only run for the Buccaneers.

Ovadek and Gardner scored the two runs in the game for Maritime.

The Buccaneers drew no walks, struck out four times and left nine runners on base.

Becker hit 13-for-34 in game two. Five hitters had two hits in the game for the guests.

Belenchia drove in three runs to help her cause in the circle, Columb drove in two runs out of the leadoff spot for the Hawks.

Becker walked once, struck out twice and left eight runners on base.
